National Night Out is an annual nationwide event that encourages residents to get out in the community, meet neighbors, and partner with police. Events can be simple gatherings to large community events. National Night Out has participation across all 50 states.

We encourage, ask for and appreciate ALL Minnesota residents to participate on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 for the 38th Annual National Night Out! Neighborhoods include everyone: homeowners, renters, retail and all businesses are needed to help make our city "the most livable place in America!" Hosting a block party or an event of any kind, large or small, provides a way for people to meet one another and discover how they can keep their neighborhoods crime free and high quality for all who live, work and play there. National Night Out has proven, time and time again, to help people work together to improve the safety of their surroundings.

Program Updates

A Successful Generation Z Online Showcase!!!

Led by multimedia artists - Aeola Lu and Mayou Her, a successful "Generation Z" Online Showcase was hosted at July 28, 2021, with the support from Asian Media Access and Pan Asian Arts Alliance.

Focusing on K-pop theme, this Gen-K showcase is a project based team hosting a pre-recorded virtual showcase highlighting the talents of the Twin Cities Generation Z (Gen-Z) community through the lens of Korean Pop culture (K-Pop). Led and supported by Gen-Z artists (all under 30 years old), they amplify the personal narratives of these talented individuals and focus on the ways K-Pop has impacted their lives. Gen-K aims to unite diverse groups of people within the community as well as provide an opportunity to present this growing culture to a larger audience. This Gen-K Showcase has allowed for the performing artists, emcees, and Gen-K staff to engage in multiple conversations about K-Pop including the positive influences it has on their lives.

These conversations have went beyond the surface and explore how individuals identify with the K-Pop culture. In addition, the showcase has welcomed the public involvement and engagement, through talent scouting, performance, and back stage multimedia works. The networks and relationships that have been developed, as well as the platform provided, has truly helped these young artists (and viewers of the program) to build a deeper sense of community.

ABOUT

Gen-K was initiated in the spring of 2020 by four Asian-American friends; Aeola Lu, Mai Her, Alexis Vang, and Lyla Lee. The project started with the desire to highlight the Generation Z (Gen-Z) community through the lens of K-Pop. They felt this platform was necessary to help provide opportunities to local artists and develop a home for K-Pop culture in the Twin Cities. For the past year and a half, they have been working hard on planning, scouting, filming and editing the showcase. Through their efforts and skills, they hope to create a space where members of this community can enjoy themselves, the culture, and the platform.

VIRTUAL SHOWCASE
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted multiple organizations and projects around the world, and it is crucial to take extra precaution to avoid further contagion. With a showcase that includes performing arts, live entertainment, and human interaction, it is a top priority for the Gen-K staff that our performers and audience members can enjoy the show safely.

As a result, the Gen-K: K-Pop Showcase (2021) has been held virtually on YouTube. Ultimately, the safety of our community members is most important, and we hope to provide a platform that allows everyone to fully appreciate the culture and the artists in the show.

VISION

Gen-K is devoted to developing a platform that showcases the talents and skills of the Generation Z community through the lens of K-Pop.

The Gen-K brand values include:
●   Belonging- Constructing a platform where members of the K-Pop community can feel like they have a home for the culture.
●   Appreciation- Amplifying the voices of the Generation Z K-Pop artists and highlighting the efforts that are being made within it.
●   Entertainment- Showcasing content that is family-friendly and enjoyable for a diverse audience.

FEATURES

This multifaceted showcase had emceed by two knowledgeable and engaging K-Pop commentators, Shannon Thao and Georgina Simon. The featured artists have had a chance to present the fruits of their practice and creativity through their performances, and then to engage in Q&A sessions to discuss the impact K-Pop had on their artistry and themselves. These parts of the show truly has amplified the different narratives and perspectives within this community.

anniversary of 9-11, a time that we acknowledge and commemorate our communal losses and to appreciate our frontline heroes. Since the pandemic, Asian American and Pacific islanders have received so much support from our healthcare and frontline workers. We hope you will join us at this commemorative occasion to show our appreciation to those heroes leading the pandemic fight.

Asian Media Access and other Asian American leaders are coming together to host a Commemoration and Appreciation Night at the historic St. Paul Union Depot. We will be inviting our local leaders in the communities including public officials, healthcare workers, emergency personnels, and many more heroes in our communities as our guests to join the Appreciation Night.

Asian Pacific leaders and the public can purchase tickets to support the Event, and proceeds will be donated to the Frontline Families Fund. The Fund is supported by the St. Paul & Minnesota Foundation, and UMN’s Center for Infectious Disease Research/Policy, that helps to pay funeral costs for health workers who died from COVID, and for college scholarships for their children.

This Business-Casual, 600-people event features Pan Asian cultural and festivity theme - from delicious Asian street food, artistic performances, elaborate Asian attires, to an upscale fusion dinner. This is a unique event that weaves together the rich traditions of the Asian region into a Minnesotan tapestry. People will enjoy a heart-warming and fulfilling experience with the wonderful cultural tastes and sights and sounds without traveling thousands of miles, but also being there to support and to show appreciation for people that are leading the pandemic fight.

Youth Spotlight

Gaonou Vang initially joined Asian Media Access through Step Up because it was an opportunity to launch herself in the workforce for the first time. Being a part of the internship exposed Vang to much more learning and opportunity than she originally anticipated. Through this experience, youth have a place to develop their communication skills, time management, teamwork, problem-solving, financial literacy, critical thinking, soft & hard skills, and explore their career interests.

This internship was a critical part in Vang strengthening her voice. Vang is the youngest member in a large family, and as the youngest, she feels that there are times she is unheard of or that her opinions are not valued or important. This internship involves a program that teaches youth about critical issues in the community while also activating their creativity. The cohort focused on developing animations and postcards with preventative action and persuasive messages. Vang's most proud work is the Gambling Addiction Animation. She learned more about the issue, found new creative ways to share information, and utilized new communication methods that she would not have known otherwise. In addition, she found that input from her other teammates was vital as they have aided in her growth and understanding during the program. They provided her more insight and ideas while also teaching her to be more open herself.

Step Up and Asian Media Access have introduced new paths for Vang, especially in terms of future careers. The people who influence Vang the most are her family, followed by her unique life experiences that will continue to help her along her career path. In the future, Vang has hopes to pursue a career helping children in the community, especially since she is most passionate about battling issues such as child abuse. Vang says, “I believe that no child should ever be neglected for circumstances they have no control over”. The projects that Vang has worked on in this internship impact the community directly. The projects put light on issues for people of all different backgrounds to relate to and receive help from. Overall, Vang has developed further skills and passion to support children and the community.

OMH is committed to gathering critical community input to inform efforts to combat racism, xenophobia and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).

Share the River Nordeast 2021

Join us for an evening of community, canoeing and cookies! Share the River Nordeast is back.

Stop by anytime between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. for a free introductory canoe ride on the Mississippi River, then grab a free cookie and enjoy a variety of fun and educational activities at our Stormwater Park and Learning Center.

This family-friendly event is great for kids and adults of all ages. (Please note that you must weigh at least 30 lbs. in order to fit the provided life jackets.)

In addition to learning to paddle on the river, participants will also have opportunities to learn about the Mississippi River’s history, water quality, plants, animals and more. You’ll also be able to connect with other local organizations about their work in the community for the environment.

Canoe rides will be led by guides from Wilderness Inquiry, with support from National Park Service rangers from the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and Mississippi Park Connection staff.

We will explore the history of the Karen and how they became refugees, and discuss how Karen communities have adapted to life in the U.S. We will also give a brief overview of Karen culture, covering everything from food, to clothing, to family, to communication styles, and more.

There will also be a question and answer session at the end of the presentation. We hope to see you there!
