Save Our Future Act (SOFA)

Introducing the carbon pricing bill designed with Environmental Justice in mind:

The  Save Our Future Act (SOFA) (S. 2085) It is a brilliant bill in that it not only prices GHG emissions at a pace projected to get us to net zero by 2050 , but it also prices local air pollutants (SOX, NOX, & PM2.5)!  If that were not enough, it goes two steps further:

  • It returns 70% of revenues through means of testing to lower income families in the form of two equal dividend checks annually

  • Uses the other 30% of the revenues to help those who have suffered disproportionally because of the extraction and burning of fossil fuels

Now THIS is a bill we should all get behind!

Opportunity to Make an Impact: Line 3 and Line 5

Line 3: A message from HPHC's Dr. Laalitha Surapaneni

Dear Climate Health Colleagues,

I'm writing to you all from Minnesota as a member of Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. We are in a very critical stage of the Line 3 struggle here. The company, Enbridge, is almost nearing the end of construction- possibly as early as the end of August.

We need to appeal to President Biden to revoke the federal permits for this pipeline. This could very well be our last chance to show up as a health community to oppose Line 3. Many of you have already signed petitions and raised awareness on social media already, and you have our eternal gratitude for the time you have given to this movement.

I'm coming to you all seeking your guidance. Our Indigenous leaders are asking us to show up on the frontlines and continue to appeal to the Biden administration in any way that we see fit. So, how do we as climate-health professionals take action?

Should we in MN organize an event where we invite you all to travel to the frontlines? Do you feel your chapters could support such an ask? Would a coordinated multi-city national event make sense? Would your chapter sign an open letter to Biden in a national news outlet? Is there another effective way to draw President Biden's attention to this issue?

In solidarity,
Laalitha

If you have ideas how we can answer this urgent call to action and believe that this is an effort you have the capacity to take the lead on for MiCCA please reach out us ASAP.

Line 5 Updates:

On June 23rd the pivotal decision to deny Enbridge’s bid to fast-track a federal Clean Water Act permit for their proposed Line 5 oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac was made. While this is cause for celebration, this is just one step in the process of protecting our water and the health of our state! Below you can find actions you can take right now to support the effort as OWDM keeps us updated on the next phases of this fight.

Immediate Action for Line 5:
If you haven’t signed the petition asking President Biden to support Gov. Whitmer’s Line 5 shutdown order, please do so now. Oil and Water Dont Mix will soon deliver them to the president and other key officials.

Also please consider supporting OWDMs Remember Kalamazoo campaign to punch back against Enbridge’s advertising campaign of Line 5 lies.

You can also show your support for preventing this tunnel with a "Shut Down Line 5 NO TUNNEL yard sign."!

Engage

American Academy of Pediatrics Climate Advocates

The Lancet stated that “climate change is the greatest global health threat facing the world in the 21st century, but it is also the greatest opportunity to redefine the social and environmental determinants of health”. Children are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of a warming climate as they are more likely to be affected by respiratory illnesses, dehydration and vector-borne diseases. The American Academy of Pediatrics was quick to respond, becoming the first national medical association to issue a policy statement on climate’s impact on health. Moreover, a group of climate-passionate pediatricians, with the help of AAP chapter executive directors, started a chapter of climate advocates. There is at least one representative from each AAP chapter and virtual meetings occur monthly. A resolution on climate has been the first step toward climate awareness for many chapters, and at least 15 chapters have climate information on their website, new members welcome!
