Rain and 'messy week' of weather for most of NZ

Severe gale south-easterly winds are expected to hit Auckland on Tuesday, as a low-pressure system moves across the top of the country with a severe weather warning remaining in place, Stuff reports. The bad weather will sweep in from the North Tasman Sea and is expected to dump between 80-100 millimetres of rain on Monday and Tuesday. It will then move down the east coast of the North Island to the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday, said MetService forecaster Aidan Pyselman.

Empty shipping containers pile up in Auckland despite global shortage and ‘ghost ship’ runs

Shipping chaos is escalating with empty shipping containers piling up at depots and “ghost ships” being sent in to fetch them, Stuff reports. CMA CGM, the fourth-largest container shipping line in the world, has refused to take any more empty containers at its Auckland depot, while another company is charging a hefty fee to return empty containers to the Auckland depots they were originally destined for. Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders federation president, Chris Edwards, says relationships between shipping companies and other supply chain players are breaking down as the former start laying on fees.

Aucklanders are invited to have their say on new streetscaping features that have been installed by Auckland Council in the northern end of Queen Street. The upgrade is the first part of interim works designed to improve Queen Street and accommodate the temporary diversion of buses while the City Rail Link (CRL) infrastructure is built. Waiheke property asking prices increase 71% in a year

Asking prices for houses on Waiheke Island have reached an average of $1.75 million, leading to fears it is becoming just a getaway for the rich, Stuff reports. Asking prices for properties on the island, a 40-minute ferry ride from central Auckland, have increased 71% in a year. By comparison, Auckland City only increased 15%. Community leaders say the skyrocketing prices and rent increases are excluding locals from the market. Waiheke Budgeting Service manager Amelia Lawley says the island risks losing its diversity.

National launches billboard campaign in Auckland to 'demand debate' on Government policies

The National Party has launched a billboard campaign imploring Kiwis to “demand the debate” on Government policies it says are being rushed through with insufficient consultation, Stuff reports. National leader Judith Collins launched the campaign on a busy street corner in Auckland’s Mt Wellington on Sunday morning, under a new digital billboard bearing her face and the message: "He Puapua? Demand the Debate." The call roots from the contentious He Puapua report, commissioned by Te Puni Kōkiri and written in 2019 to set out how the Government could achieve the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

NZ's inadequate hygiene in public toilets flagged by health experts

A survey found the poor state of New Zealand's public toilets could increase the transmission of disease, RNZ reports. According to the The New Zealand Medical Journal survey, local and central government agencies have not done enough to keep the hygiene of these facilities up to standard. Nearly 15% of the 400 public toilets surveyed had no soap, and only 28% had 'no-touch' activation. Almost three-quarters of the toilet blocks had no health-related signs.

Government considers new limits on bottom trawling

Environment Minister David Parker says he is open to the idea of phasing out bottom trawling in areas that have not already been trawled, RNZ reports. Parker's statement comes after new information gathered by conservation group WWF that shows the virgin sea bed covering an area three times the size of Auckland has been trawled over the past decade. While WWF New Zealand and Green's Eugene Sage want a complete phase out of all bottom trawling, Parker suggested to limit bottom trawling to areas that have previously been trawled and to improve methods to reduce environmental impacts.
