Headed for a meltdown

Through all of our breakups, lockdowns and flat-out hard times, there's one thing that's always been there for us. Cheap wine. OK, two things. Cheap wine and ice cream. Today, in honor of National Ice Cream Month, we raise our cones to you, frozen milk of the gods. Indeed, we lick you berry much.

Forward this to your one and cone-ly.

You got soft served

We've got the scoop on Gate City ice cream shops. From rolled to hand dipped, from classic vanilla to orange creamsicle, you’ll find it all here. But our city is more than just a freezer box of sweet, magical goodness. Ice cream is a part of who we are. After all, one of the biggest contributors to Greensboro's OG economic success was the Cone family. That's no coincidence.

  • Wanna spoon? Ozzie's Ice Cream on Old Battleground dishes out Blue Bell Ice Cream in every flavor you can imagine. We're not trying to cover up our peppermint bark moose tracks – unless it's with chocolate sauce.
  • Yum Yum Better Ice Cream and Hot Dogs, a Greensboro staple that began as a pushcart, is older than Betty White, but just as sweet – if not sweeter. Don't tell Betty we said that.
  • Wanna take that National Ice Cream Month celebration to the international level? Check out Lucha Libre Ice Cream for luscious munchies with Mexican flair. We'll take a Smackdown from them any day: a milkshake served up with a crispy churro loop.
  • Ice Scraperz gets the ball sweet treats rolling with their signature ice cream service. Their roll call includes Cookie Monster, Oh Fudge and Death by Chocolate – which is exactly how we'd like to go, please and thank you.
  • Sometimes, you gotta go right to the source. Take a trip to Homeland Creamery, whose goodies are available in shops throughout North Carolina. Their cows are well-loved and chill AF, which makes for some of the best ice cream on cud's green earth. Our kinda cowlick.
  • Downtown Greensboro's Savor the Moment Bakery dishes out scrumptious cakes and scoops up an array of ice cream flavors. Insider tip: Grab a single scoop on $2 Tuesday! After you've licked the cone clean, don a new costume and repeat.
  • Elaka Treats has repeatedly bowled us over with their unique Indian and Arab-inspired flavors. Cardamom's the word. You can order for pick up at Out of the Garden Project (which helps provide food to those in need) or find Elaka at local farmers markets, listed each week on Instagram. Do the dew Try the chai.
  • The Ice Queen – no, not that ice queen – rolls around town, serving up popsicles, scoops and ice cream sammiches. This set of wheels is the souped-up truck of our dreams: Fast & frozen-ous.

Good on paper

Art on Paper returns to The Weatherspoon Art Museum  on July 24 for its 46th year. This exhibit shows off all the ways something as simple as paper can be turned into beautiful works of art. Also known as The Humble Beginnings of Paper Airplanes. Ok, we made that up.

Fluent in movie quotes

The Summer Film Fest plays on at the Carolina Theatre this week with showings of Rope, Get Out, The Big Chill and a special Marx Brothers double feature of Duck Soup and Horse Feathers. After summer days spent with kids, we're pretty stoked about movies where no one speaks.

Ain't that a drag

The only thing racing around here lately is our hearts, but did you know Piedmont Dragway is in action right now with a full schedule of events? If you like your cars how we like our partners – fast and dirty – be sure to get on track at the dragway.

The mountain music is calling, and we must go. The Carolina Theatre welcomes Colin Cutler with Christen Mack – plus Viva La Muerte and Laura Jane Vincent – this Saturday, July 24, at 7 p.m., for a Ghostlight Concert. Cutler will play his latest album, Hot Pepper Jam. Pairs well with crackers and cream cheese.

Behold – your blanket awaits

This Friday, July 23, whisk the kiddos off on a magical ad-van-ture to The Great Lawn at LeBauer Park for movie night. The film: Onward. No idea what it's about, but it sounds like it's headed in the right direction.

Get ex-cidered!

Forecast: Bingo with a chance of drinking

Grab your bingo bro-squad and head downtown to The Bearded Goat every other Wednesday night at 8 p.m. for Music Bingo with DJ Mike Wawa. We'll be the ones falsely yelling "Bingo!" for our own entertainment.

Ptero-draft-yl overhead

On Wednesday, July 21, at 7 pm, hold onto your butts and bring a blanket to Oden Brewing for a movie – Jurassic Park – in the beer garden. Also, be sure to check out their live music line-up for the weekend, including the Firecrackers, whose sound will make your heart explode – in a good way, of course.

Lighting up the night

The Brown Mountain Lightning Bugs will be live at Bull City Ciderworks on Saturday, July 24, at 5:30 p.m. Their soulful style of folk is anything but flashy, but is sure to leave you with a happy afterglow.

Even if we're just prancing in the dark

Friday night, dress in your best glow-in-the-dark socks and running shoes, and hit the pavement for Greensboro Distilling Speakeasy 5k. We started the Couch to 5K program so we could join, but never made it past phase one – the couch. Meet you post-race for cocktails and live jazz music at Fainting Goat.

Cardio is way too hardio

This evening at 6 p.m., meet on the Greenway at the Morehead Park Trailhead for Cardio Plus. We're hoping it's "plus beer." Or "plus ice cream." Cardio plus carbs has a nice ring to it.

Will squat for hard cider

Tonight at 5:30, hit the barre at the bar. That's right. Pure Barre Greensboro is popping up at Bull City Ciderworks with Wanderlust Boards, SynerG and Rebound Protein for Barre, Boards & Brews. Make sure you register for your chance to plié, relevé, IPA.

Smells like potential

Ted Lasso returns to Apple TV for its second season on Friday, July 23. If you've seen Season One, consider yourself enlightened. If you need us this weekend, we'll be lounging on the sofa with a pink bakery box full of biscuits we meant to share with our boss and a cuppa tea. Kidding, tea is horrible and tastes like hot brown water. We're going straight for the whiskey. Early drinkin' means quick drunken'.
