ISSUE NO. 12  July 11, 2021
Hi friends,

Recently, I published a blog post called How I’m Being Kinder to Myself, and in it, I wrote about giving the things you love the attention they deserve. For me, that means scheduling my hobbies just like I’d schedule a dinner date with a friend or my work hours. Most people just default to their hobbies when they’re bored or when they have spare time, but to me, that still feels like an afterthought. I’ve been trying to be more intentional about my hobbies and blocking out an hour or two (or four!) for them, just like I would for other important tasks in my life.

Because here’s the thing: the hobbies you enjoy are important.

Shortly after publishing that blog post, I decided that July would be a month for my hobbies. Yes, I already indulge a fair amount in my hobbies, but July in particular felt like the perfect month to be even more intentional about them. There are new books for me to read and new video games releasing this month that I’m very excited about, so I promised I would work on giving my hobbies my undivided attention.

What I mean by that is this: sometimes when I’m partaking in my hobbies, I’ll double-up and do something else to “optimize” my hobby time. For example, sometimes when I’m watching a new TV show, I’ll clean. Or if I’m playing a video game, I’ll also listen to a podcast. Or if I’m writing, I’ll put on a livestream. All of these “extra” things are also things I want to do, but multitasking divides my attention between both. Now, I’m trying to be less focused on doing the most and more focused on one hobby at a time—and giving each the full attention they deserve. That way, I can enjoy them even more.

This month, try to honor your hobby time as you would time with a friend. Put your phone away while you’re watching a TV show, and turn off all other distractions while you’re reading a book or playing a game. Set a timer if you have to—first for 15 minutes, then for 30, then an hour. Try to remain as present as possible in your hobby and see how you feel afterward. I bet you will appreciate your time spent even more.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be on Hakolo Island.

this week I loved...

1. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. I’ve been eyeballs-deep into this game all weekend and can’t express how much I love it.

2. This article in the Los Angeles Times about the cozy video game movement and why we need them now more than ever.

3. My new Animal Crossing: New Horizons shirts from Uniqlo. This collaboration is the CUTEST, and I’m so thrilled to add these tees and totes to my collection.

4. This fan-made video tribute to Mad Men spotlighting the show’s gorgeous visual storytelling by stitching together the last frame from each episode. It’s beautiful.
