“Too late,” said Maggie. “That’s Myrtle, that one’s Verna, and this one is Dinah. Come on, ladies, chick-chick-chick! Go on, call ’em.”
“Chicky chick chick!” And they all came hustling and clucking. I poured the scratch into the feeder in the hen house, and they scrambled inside.
Maggie locked up the door. “Eggs for breakfast. Eggs for breakfast, actually, pretty much every day now. Glad you’re here to help us eat them. And quiche. And frittatas. And cakes . . .”
“Will you show me?” I asked.
“Sure! Do you cook much at home?”

from Opulence, Kansas, by Julie Stielstra
2021 Midwest Book Award Winner--Young Adult Category

From the Publisher's Desk

Dear <<First Name>>,

It has been another busy month for Meadowlark Press and our authors. First, we enjoyed the launch of Ava: A Year of Adventure in the Life of an American Avocet, in a fun-filled event at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center in Great Bend, Kansas. What a treat it was to see those kids with copies of our book in hand, engrossed in the story as Mandy Kern, the author, read.

Gold Seal - Midwest Book Awards
Second, we were thrilled by the news that Opulence, Kansas, by Julie Stielstra, was selected as the gold medal winner in the 2021 Midwest Book Awards, Young Adult category. This is the second big honor for this title which was selected for inclusion on the "recommended list" of the Kansas National Education Association’s Reading Circle Commission earlier this year. If the young adult reader in your life does not already have a copy, get them one today!

We are looking forward to some new poetry titles on the Meadowlark bookshelves in the next couple of months. Stay tuned for our next publication announcement!

Grappling with loss and disillusionment, Katie must forge new skills and new friendships in a small town called Opulence, a town holding secrets and riches she will need before she can go back home.
