The Yosemite
by John Muir
read by Nick McArdle
August is traveling month. If you find that it is still a bit too uncertain to set foot in an airplane, lean back, close your eyes and listen to John Muir’s The Yosemite.

In 1868, Scottish immigrant John Muir is forced to interrupt his travels to Cuba due to a severe bout of malaria. Instead, he sets sail for San Francisco via Panama. Shocked by the sounds and sights of the big city, Muir finds his way to Yosemite. In this audio book, John Muir gifts the listener with his beautiful, downright loving descriptions of this wondrous place.

John Muir puts into words what he sees and experiences in Yosemite with such vivid colors that pictures of Bob Ross and his inspired brush were conjured up in my mind. Muir is known, among other things, as a naturalist and environmental philosopher. This audio book definitely has philosophical and even poetic parts and I appreciated the beauty of the landscape and the beauty of his words. Muir also includes suggestions for day trips. How much fun would it be to go to Yosemite book in hand and follow in his footsteps?

John Muir was born in Scotland and spent the first ten years of his life there. Nick McArdle is the perfect fit as narrator for this audio book. His Scottish lilt is as gentle as the words he is reading. I found that the perfect combination of written and spoken word was almost meditative. I would not recommend this title for listening while driving. In the course of the book, I could not help but close my eyes and give myself over to the lush magnificence that was described to me.
At times, the text turns a bit scientific, but to me, this audio book feels like a walk in the woods. You don’t remember every step, i.e. every plant mentioned, but at the end of the walk you just feel contentment and you remember the overall enjoyment of the walk. This is the case with this book. There was so much botanical information in it which I could not repeat or much less retain. I felt, though, the admiring reverence and the philosophical love which shines through John Muir’s words and lays itself around the listener like a cozy blanket.

However, Muir ends his book with warning words about preserving and protecting nature and all she gives to us. I found it alarming and also sad, that this seemed to have been an issue already in 1912, when his book was published.

For our armchair traveling patrons, TDL offers many more titles about travel. If Yosemite National Park is too rustic for you, maybe you would like to travel in your mind to Europe. Rick Steve’s For the Love of Europe, takes you to the travel writer’s favorite places. Or if, like me, you harbor a not-so-secret love affair with the city of Venice, listen to Venice by Jan Morris and, new to the library, Venice by Peter Ackroyd.

TDL offers all the titles mentioned in audio:

Yosemite, by John Muir
For the Love of Europe, by Rick Steve
Venice, by Jan Morris
Venice, by Peter Ackroyd

Teen Books With Pierce
The Field Guide to the North American Teenager
by Ben Philippe
As the summer days begin to wind down, some eagerly await the fall and the changing of the leaves, while others lament the loss of warm days and summer vacation. Students everywhere let out a collective groan at the idea of going back to school for another semester filled with homework, tests, and early morning wake ups. But don’t be dismayed, there are lots of wonderful moments and experiences to be found amongst friends in and outside of the classroom. Just don’t try telling that to Norris Kaplan…

This young adult novel follows Norris, a black, French Canadian, who has recently moved to Austin, Texas and started at a new high school in the middle of the year following his parents’ divorce. He is less than thrilled to be uprooted from Canada and transplanted into an American culture he has only seen on TV and in pop culture. Cynical and frustrated with all the chaos in his life, Norris begins to catalog and take note of all the cliches and types of people he encounters in his new school. The book, his “field guide”, is broken down into chapters detailing his interactions and observations with the “loners”, “jocks”, and “cheerleaders” among others.

Norris has never been good at making friends and doesn’t want to bother trying. He simply hopes to bide his time until he can go back to Canada and to entertain himself by labeling and making fun of everyone around him in the process. Except things don’t quite work out as planned. Norris has to come to terms with the realization that not everyone is as simple as the labels he assigns. He gets to know people like Liam, the loner, who might just turn out to be a real friend, or some of the girls in school who might just be real love interests. Maybe things actually aren’t as bad as they seem.

Until Prom night, where a series of events cause everything to fall apart, and Norris is stuck trying to put it all back together. This book is an ideal read for those heading back to school. It does a great job in capturing all the funny, awkward, and joyful moments of high school. Finish off your summer reading and prepare yourself for another year back at school with this beloved novel.

TDL owns this book in hardcover.
