Did you know... that Ukrainians started immigrating to Canada 130 years ago?
The first recorded Ukrainian settlers arrived in Canada in 1891, when two immigrants, Vasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypiw, from the Galician province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, landed in Montreal.

A year and a half later, Ivan took his family and Vasyl`s wife from the village of Nebyliv to Canada. Leaving his hometown, Ivan persuaded his fellow villagers to seek a better life overseas.
|
|
|
|
He was later followed by other families from Nebyliv and surrounding villages, who founded the first and largest settlement of Ukrainians in Canada near Edmonton, in what is now the province of Alberta. In the years that followed, tens of thousands of Ukrainians arrived in Canada to start a new life.
|
|
|
These Ukrainian pioneers created societies and public organizations, they built churches and schools. Some Ukrainians became prominent politicians and statesmen! Ukrainian immigrants tried to preserve national traditions the best they could.
