14 October / 11h - 12h / UTC will be present at the European Week of Regions and Cities 2021

Promoting soft mobility in the Mediterranean

Towards more sustainable mobility systems

14 October 2021, 11h-12h
Registration opens on 30 August 2021

Urban Transports Community pitch will unveil policy recommendations for the implementation of soft mobility in the Mediterranean & showcase the results of a successful replication of soft mobility solutions in the Mediterranean through a mentoring process. Soft mobility is a proven driver of better public health and quality of life in cities. The COVID-19 pandemic has nudged decision-makers to see cycling in a new light. It is time for cities and regions to double down on their investment in soft mobility as key for more sustainable and resilient mobility. We will show how the Med pioneers are doing it.

POLICY BRIEF #1 PROMOTING SOFT MOBILITY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The development of soft mobility in the Mediterranean region requires the implementation of suitable interconnected policies at the EU, national, regional, and local level.

Building upon experience gained through the implementation of projects related to soft mobility in Albania, Croatia, Greece, Spain and Italy, the Urban Transports Community highlights the importance of soft mobility, showcases lessons learned through case studies and outlines policy measures for the promotion of soft mobility. The policy brief puts forward policy recommendations for public authorities and stakeholders at the local, regional, national and EU level.

At the local and regional level, we stress the need to foster collaboration among municipalities, adopt bottom-up design, involve local stakeholders, foster user, and non-user acceptability, consider infrastructure quality, encourage multimodality, assess, measure, and ensure enforcement and surveillance. At the national and EU level, we highlight the need to regulate and provide technical specifications, coordinate, and facilitate the implementation of soft mobility schemes, provide financial support and train users and non-users and personnel.

European Mobility Week 2021: Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning

The 10th SUMP Award is now accepting applications

Applications for the 10th edition of the SUMP Award are now open, with this year's award focusing on the theme “Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility”.

Application deadline: 24.00 (CET), 31 October 2021

The European Commission's award for sustainable urban mobility planning was launched in 2012. The aim of the award is to encourage the adoption of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) by local authorities across Europe and to reward outstanding achievements in each year’s thematic priority area.

The SUMP Award is separate to the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award, but remains complementary. The Urban Transports Community is an Interreg MED Programme initiative launched in November 2016 and renewed in October 2019 till June 2022. The Community is promoting sustainable urban mobility planning in the Euro-Mediterranean region as an effective tool to reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of life of the population and the environment.

Since November 2016, the Community featured by a horizontal project has gathered seven territorial cooperation projects co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and almost 120 organisations (public authorities, private companies, universities, NGOs and international organisations) from 12 Euro-Mediterranean countries. In this second phase the Community has the opportunity to bring the capitalisation process to the next level by providing local authorities with a tailor-made support to implement the replicable solutions developed and tested by our Community.

The Urban Transports Community is featured by a project lead by  MedCities (Barcelona, Spain), in partnership with UNIMED Mediterranean Universities Union (Rome, Italy),  Area Science Park (Trieste, Italy), CODATU (Lyon, France), CIVINET CY-EL (Cyprus-Greece), POLIS, Cities and Regions for transport innovation (Brussels, Belgium), and Durres Municipality (Durres, Albania).
