Latest News in Healthtech Innovation

A Scottish association is set to use an augmented reality software to help train surgeons on hyper-real 3d-printed models of human organs. The software will help guide trainee surgeons as they perform surgery on the lifelike models and will be used in the UK. The consortium includes companies such as Organlike and NHS Highland and have begun distributing kits to the UK and Africa.

 “You can’t patent algorithms” & "The Rise of Femtech"

In this article, Jack Severs, European patent attorney at Gill Jennings & Every LLP, presents three articles directed at all innovators using artificial intelligence to solve problems in healthcare.  The series addresses common misconceptions around the protection of AI-based HealthTech inventions and provides practical guidance on steps to secure protection that supports your commercial aims and the wider adoption of your technology.
 
This article introduces patent protection in the AI and HealthTech space and focuses on a key question – when is an AI technology patentable?


In this article, we are starting to see signs for a change in the traditionally male dominated HealthTech sector, with one in five patents now including at least one female inventor and a much needed increase in innovation focused on women’s health.
 
Elizabeth Capel, a patent attorney at Gill Jennings & Every LLP, explores the necessity for diversity in inventor ship and the trends in innovation developing within the rapidly growing Femtech sector.

British healthtech company, MediMusic, is aiming to dispense music as medicine as an evidence-based service to reduce anxiety and pain - as well as provide quantifiable costs savings for health practitioners. Within a few clicks a handful of personalised playlists are auto-generated and curated specifically to you. As the playlist runs, your heart rate is monitored and tracks are swapped out by their Digital Drip to help bring your heart rate down faster or slower depending on the situation.

"Reasons to be cheerful, Part 3"

Thousands of toddlers will be screened for an inherited gene that can cause early heart disease. Within the next two years, 30,000 children across England will be assessed using a heal prick blood test to identify whether or not they have the faulty gene, familial hypercholesterolemia. FH is an inherited condition passed down through families that can lead to high cholesterol levels, with it affecting 1 in 250 people in the UK.

Fundraising - leading health tech innovators raising capital

The fitness app HealthifyMe raised $75 million in a Series C led by Leapfrog and Khosla Ventures. HealthifyMe’s app uses multiple AI-based tech to have more personalized health plans for individuals and they plan to launch worldwide with the funding.

Is "(health-tech) software eating the world"?  DTx innovator of the Week

Hinge Health

Hinge Health is a UK-based startup that has received $436.1M in funding to date. They have created the world’s first digital clinic for musculoskeletal pain and have been validated at scale to reduce pain and avoid surgeries.

 

They have used advanced technology, such as wearable motion sensors and nerve stimulation technology, in combination with clinical knowledge from physicians and orthopedic surgeons to create their innovative solution. So far they have partnered with over 300 employers and health care plans.
