Zoar: A Little Place of Refuge from the Heat

Here at Zoar, a small, but dedicated group of volunteers led by Council President Steve Morgan is on site and ready to welcome anyone in need of a safe place to retreat from the hot weather. On days when the temperature soars to 95 and above, the Emergency Cooling Shelter will be open in the afternoons and evenings until the temperature drops to 85.

As you may have heard, when Zoar's cooling shelter was open during the terrible heatwave in June, it probably helped to save at least three lives: an elderly couple and a woman who was found on a sidewalk near Zoar, after having done a "face plant" due to the heat.

Today, July 29, the Oregonian published a list of cooling centers, and Zoar is on the list! This morning we received the following note of appreciation from a neighbor:

Dear Zoar Lutheran,
I read in today's Oregonian that you will host a cooling center.
Thank you my friends!
You are doing what Christ instructed us to do.
Good job, I wish others would follow your stellar
example!
Sincerely,
Brian Fitzgerald
Happy Valley

(As your pastor, I'm so grateful for all the ways the members of Zoar embody
Christ's love and compassion for "the least of these" in this challenging and changing
time. Like our neighbor, Brian, I, too, pray that others will learn
to follow Christ's example. --Pastor Michelle)
Hear ye! Hear ye!
All courageous, compassionate young squires

and we'll find inspiration in these Bible stories:

"Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego Stand True" (Tuesday)
"David Defeats Goliath" (Wednesday)
"Midnight Praise with Paul and Silas" (Thursday)

 God is Multiplying the Loaves and Fishes...
and the Casseroles and Compassion!

It's been truly humbling and amazing to see how God has recently been multiplying the loaves of Zoar's feeding ministry. Besides feeding hungry people during the wildfires last fall, during the ice storm this past winter, and during the heat waves this past couple of days and last month, some of our crew members have been preparing and serving lunch Monday through Thursday at the Canby Center. The program has only been operating a few weeks, but the number of people served has been multiplying. This tells us two things: 1) People are hungry; and 2) People are hungry for community.

In the spirit of Jesus, who always fed hungry people, our faithful Tuesday and Sunday night dinner crews also continue to care for our neighbors by serving delicious, nutritious dinners in our narthex area or to go. In recent months they've been consistently serving around 100 meals each night.

Please hold our Tuesday and Sunday night dinner crews in your prayers, and please pray for our neighbors in this time when the needs often seem overwhelming.

If you'd like to volunteer to help our dinner crew serve, or if you can provide home-baked cookies, please contact the church office: 503-266-4061 or zoar@canby.com.
Thanks to our crew of dedicated volunteers, Zoar's Furniture Ministry in partnership with Love INC is open and serving clients several times each month.

Throughout the pandemic, our Furniture Ministry has been open to receive donations and to provide much-needed furniture and furnishings. Upcoming dates and hours are as follows:
  • Saturday, July 31, 9 am-1 pm
  • Saturday, Aug. 14, 9 am - 2:30 pm
  • Saturday, Aug. 28, 9 am- 2:30 pm

Can you help? Our furniture ministry is in great need of the following items:

  • queen mattresses and box springs
  • measuring cups and measuring spoons
  • cookie sheets; muffin tins; 9" X 13" pans;
  • toasters; electric hand mixers;
  • bath towels, wash cloths, and bath mats;
  • blankets in all sizes;
  • twin sheet sets and/or twin fitted sheets;
  • area rugs;
  • fry pans and sauce pans;
  • forks and spoons;
  • lamps
The Clothes Closet hosted a clothing swap for some of their clients on Thursday, July 29, 4-7 pm. This event gave folks a chance to say hello, check out the new space, and get some back-to-school clothing. When Pastor Michelle arrived back from Camp Lutherwood at 5:30 that evening, she saw a happy family heading back to their car with shopping bags and popsicles for the little ones, who were happily bantering about "brain freeze!"

Please stay tuned for an announcement about the Grand Opening of the Clothes Closet, which will happen before the end of the summer!

The Clothes Closet is now accepting donations of clothing. Please make arrangements for drop off through the church office: 503-266-4061 or zoar@canby.com

The Clothes Closet is an outreach program of the Canby Transgender Alliance (CTA) that has been in existence for two years. The Living Room in Oregon City, which provides a safe space and resources for LGBTQ youth and young adults, is also a partner.

At present, Zoar is supporting this important outreach by providing space to the Clothes Closet. In the future, we hope to receive training that will enable us to have Zoar volunteers welcome and offer support to vulnerable people in the community. Sarah Rodriguez from CTA is the main contact person for the Clothes Closet.

Members of Zoar's volunteer support team include: Cindi Jeskey, Mel Kubik, Jewell Manley, Kårin Rothi, and Pastor Michelle Manicke (Ex officio).
You Are Invited to Join the Thursday Morning Bible Study
as We Explore Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Life Together!
In preparation for August 5, please read the second half of chapter 2 of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's classic work, Life Together, and as we engage in conversation this week, let's continue to make an intentional effort to remember Bonhoeffer's insight that Christ is in the middle of all your relationships--especially those relationships we find challenging. We'll try to notice how this changes the way we speak and interact with others.

Bonhoeffer composed this gem of a book as a means of calling the church back to its mission and responsibility rooted in the gospel. His goal in writing was twofold: 1. to help Christians form intentional faith communities that work; and 2. to help Christians learn to navigate life together in their communities for the sake of the gospel.

Throughout the summer, we'll be looking at how Bonhoeffer's biblically grounded wisdom might inform our sense of Christian community in this place and time. It's surprising how timeless-and timely!--much of Bonhoeffer's wisdom is for the church today. We'd love to have YOU join in the conversation.

As always, "BYOB"--bring your own Bible,  a listening ear, and an open heart, and feel free to join us! Pastor Michelle looks forward to seeing you on Zoom Thursdays at 10:30 am. The meeting link and the password will be the same each week and are listed below:

Zoar's Women's Bible Study

Our women's Bible study has been meeting weekly since the pandemic began and, thanks to the wonders of technology, has 15 faithful members from Zoar and our extended Zoar family. Leader JoAnn Rothi says that even once the pandemic is over, the group will likely continue to meet via Zoom, as it enables people from near and far to join. Also, this way no one has to drive at night!

Currently, this group is engaged in a study of biblical miracles. Please check with JoAnn Rothi for the weekly theme and for materials (
joannrothi@hotmail.com) or (503) 655-6559.

The link to join is the same each week:
