Are you a high school student who is devoted to improving your craft and wants to find others like you? If so, the Young Writers Cohort is for you!

Young Writers Cohort members meet every other week for two hours to focus on improving their creative writing, whether it's prose, poetry, or a little of both. Cohort members work with each other and their instructor to learn, practice, and grow as writers, while developing a supportive and educational cohort.

How do you become a Cohort member?

Cohort members are selected based on a written application and a writing sample. There is no application fee or tuition involved. We are looking for youth who have a strong commitment to writing and who have a desire to work in a collaborative team environment. No prior experience in a similar program is needed.

The application is open to writers of all interests, levels of experience, and backgrounds. In addition, the Young Writers Cohort actively seeks out youth who represent diverse and/or unique voices, and we highly encourage youth to apply whose voices are often underrepresented in mainstream media.

How many Cohorts are there?

Because of the growing popularity of this program, we will be offering three Cohort options this year!

Two of these, Poetry and Prose, will meet in-person at Hugo House as soon as it is safe to do so (hopefully by January 2022). Before then, they'll meet virtually. The third cohort, Creative Writing, will meet virtually all year and be open to both prose and poetry writers.
