Guest Speaker to Discuss Aphasia with Stroke Support Group
A New York State-licensed and certified speech and language pathologist will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Aug. 5, meeting of the regional Stroke Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health.
At 1 p.m. in a meeting held via Zoom, Suzanne Johnston will discuss aphasia, defined by the National Aphasia Association (NAA) as “an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write.” It is due to an injury to the brain, most commonly from a stroke, according to the NAA. Johnston, who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, facilitates the Aphasia Stroke Support Group that meets at Nazareth College in Rochester.
Thompson’s monthly support group is open to individuals who have experienced a stroke, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. The group facilitator is stroke-certified registered nurse Sarah Gallagher, the stroke coordinator at F.F. Thompson Hospital.

Wagner Vineyards: Disrupting the Wine Industry with Care
How the Finger Lakes winery is approaching DEI
✍ Written by Maiah Johnson Dunn for newyorkwines.org
This is not a story about wine. This is a story about humanity within our community.
2020 was rough. In the year we slowed down, we were forced to sit and watch our world be rocked by a global pandemic and a relentless stream of heartbreaking news. Related to those moments was June 2, 2020. Accounts across social media posted black squares in a movement called Black Tuesday. It was done in solidarity with the Black community reeling from the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. While some larger brands in the wine industry participated, most stayed quiet. In the past, it wasn’t unusual for companies to selectively care, but this time was different. This time, business-as-usual in the face of hatred was an insufficient response.
That same week, I shut down my wine-focused Instagram account when my local community stayed a little too silent about saving Black lives. I realized that with every swirl, every sniff, every chew and aeration I was working hard for approval to sit at the tasting table. It’s very difficult to appreciate the wine when you’re busy trying to prove your worth.
So, this is not a story about wine. This is a story about creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive Finger Lakes. We can do better. And, this is a story about how one local winery already is.

Covid Delta Variant
You may be hearing some chatter about the Delta Variant in relation to Covid-19. As viruses live, they continue to change and mutate. Some are innocuous and disappear quickly. Others hang around for a while and may or may not be of concern. Scientists monitor all of these change events and their relation to each other in order to determine its strength and treatment options, and have done so since the virus first came on scene. They also classify them being “of interest” or “of concern”. Read more.

How To Pick a Ripe Melon
You are at the food store and there is a huge bin of melons. How do you know which to choose to get the best value for your money? In general look at the dimple where it attached to the rest of the plant. There should be a clean, dish-shaped scar from harvesting. If it is displayed at room temperature (not refrigerated) it should have a pleasant aroma. Read more
