What's New with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways

Cafe Streets Survey

From The Patio in Columbia City, to the multi-block row of outdoor dining options on Ballard Ave, to the U District's lively new Outdoors on the Ave setup, Cafe Streets are flourishing all over the city. As many city leaders around the globe know, turning streets into space for people is good for public health (better ventilation than being indoors), good for small businesses and workers — and it improves the quality of our community life.

The Seattle Department of Transportation is seeking feedback on what you would like to see for Seattle's Cafe Streets program going forward. The survey closes on August 15th so make your voice heard! See our five ideas for how this program should evolve.

New Signals Policy for Safer Intersections

All people deserve traffic signals that allow them to walk and roll safely and with dignity. That's why we're excited the city has adopted a new signals policy that gives people more time to cross the street (so you don't get stranded as the light changes part-way across), shorter wait times to get the walk light, and automated signals that don't make you push a button to get the walk light. It's not a perfect policy, but it's important progress. Read more →

Seattle City Council Funds Permanent Stay Healthy Streets!

Seattle City Council just passed $2.5 million to make Stay Healthy Streets permanent! Unfortunately, the future of Keep Moving Streets on Alki Point, Lake Washington Boulevard, and Green Lake are still up in the air. Read more →

Lake Washington Boulevard Open Every Weekend This Summer!

The city has re-opened Lake Washington Boulevard from Seward Park to Mt Baker for people to walk, bike, roll, run, skate, and play for every weekend this summer! We are excited that the city has re-opened this beloved park street for people to escape the heat, but this announcement falls short of what the public wants (65% want it to be open all the time, including a majority of BIPOC and 98118 residents). 2021 Racial Equity Update & Opportunities

Seattle Neighborhood Greenways embraces the powerful idea that mobility — the ability to get to the goods, services, and opportunities of daily life safely, comfortably, affordably — is a basic human right. Yet we know that access to safe, healthy mobility is not equitably shared in Seattle (see the chart above, for one example). Quite the contrary. In so many aspects of people’s daily life here — where we can afford to live, our ability to own or drive a private vehicle, how far we need to travel to get to work or to the nearest grocery store, how safe we are when walking, rolling, or crossing the street, and how we are viewed by police officers on our streets — race and racism play a huge role in determining our ability to get to where we need to go. Find out about SNG's racial equity work in 2021, including two new scholarships, our new racial equity workgroup, our updated Racial Equity Plan for 2021-2024 and our annual racial equity workshop (coming up — save the date!). Read more →

Don't Forget To Vote!

With our allies at the MASS Coalition, we hosted both a mayoral candidate forum and a city council candidate forum. These were thought-provoking conversations about the future of Seattle, touching on critical themes related to transportation, equity, and the environment.
