Tigers travel to Calif., record first match as club

The Centennial Tigers traveled nearly 1,300 miles to San Francisco, Calif., to play in their first match ever as a club. Twenty-one athletes, a coaching staff, and fans flew from Colorado to California July 23. Taking on the four-time reigning national champions was a daunting task, but the Tigers persevered and left everything on the track.

The first two quarters were rough, as this is the first season of footy for 71% of the athletes rostered. But the Tigers started to figure out the flow of the game and positioning once the third and fourth quarters rolled around. Centennial held the Iron Maidens to one goal three in the third and one goal four in the fourth.

Evie Oglesby, ruckman, played phenomenally, earning her team’s votes for Best on Ground. With the first match under the Tigers’ belts (and probably the toughest match of the season), the only way is up!

Thanks to our friends at Women’s Australian Rules Football Radio, the match was recorded, commentated by Julia Montesano and uploaded to the USAFL’s YouTube channel.

Congratulations to the Centennial Tigers — a club founded in 2019 that has worked for over 18 months to play in their first match. The future is bright!

Upcoming matches:

August 21: USAFL Central Regional Tournament in Arlington, TX
September 18: Centennial Invitational Tournament in Littleton, CO
October 2: Rocky Mountain Clash v the Denver Bulldogs in Lone Tree, CO
October 18-19: USAFL National Tournament in Austin, TX

Coach’s Corner

After 18 months of start-and-stop footy, dedication, perseverance, and tons of hard work—both on and off the field—our Centennial Tigers ROARED to life on July 24. For the duration of the match, our team represented the great things this club stands for:

Tenacity – Facing the four-time defending National Champions, we were fearless; our team pushed back time and time again against our opponents, at every opportunity, for 60 long, hard minutes.

Integrity – From the opening horn to the post game handshake, our team played with spirit, determination, and integrity; we played fair at every bounce.

Grit – Playing against a more-experienced team, we showed courage and resolve throughout the match.

Empowerment – After two years, we’ve both overcome every obstacle encountered and strengthened our resolve. We have demonstrated that this team will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Respect – Our determined, physical, and relentless play on the track earned our opponent’s and our teammates’ respect.

Sportsmanship – From the very start to the very end, our team played fair, showed class, and displayed the sportsmanship.

While the scoreboard looked lopsided, the track could barely contain the immense pride felt by your coaches and supporters. Take pride in how you represented and performed. We will continue to learn, improve our knowledge and skills, and challenge ourselves to get fitter. Keep demonstrating what it means to be a Centennial Tiger, and on to Regionals!

2021 Captains nominated, selected

The Tigers invited all players to nominate members of the team they considered leaders—with nearly 20 ladies nominated.

On July 24, the board held an in-person vote, and Chris Briggs and Sara Edwards Rohner were nominated by the team to serve as the club’s inaugural and 2021 team captains!

“Thank you for your vote of confidence in selecting Sara and me as your co-captains,” said Chris. “This is going to be a stellar year of footy, and we’ve got an awesome team, coaching staff, sponsors and supporters. I’m proud to be a Tiger!”

Chris Briggs, Carly Austin, Jenn Elliott and Sara Edwards Rohner were in the final four for voting.

Tuesday training location change!

Tuesday trainings will be held at Abbott Park in Centennial (near University and County Line) during the month of August due to field unavailability with kids’ soccer starting. Saturday trainings will remain at Sweetwater Park in Lone Tree Saturdays 8-10 a.m. for the duration of the season.

Resolute to can, label Tiger’s brew

Resolute Brewing, one of our amazing partners, is going to can and label a Tigers brew! Only July 11, Resolute hosted members of the Tigers, our friends and our family for a tasting event. Everyone had a chance to mingle, taste beers and vote on the label. The votes have been tallied, and our first Tigers brew will be a pineapple wheat! In addition, artist Zachary Roy designed label options, and while both labels had ample supporters, the group voted on the following label design.

Special thanks to Resoute Brewing, Resolute Director of Operations Andrew Duvall, Tigers Alexis Koo and Tami Meis, and Artist Zachary Roy for making this idea a reality!

Centennial Invitational to celebrate the women’s game

We are looking forward to seeing athletes representing nearly 15 USAFL at the Centennial Invitational Australian Football Tournament on September 18! The Centennial Invitational was conceptualized as a way to celebrate the women’s game in the US.

The tournament will be complete with various vendors, and the after party will be held at the Clock Tower Grill. Click the link below to get redirected to the tournament website for more information!

Tigers meet community, recruit

During July, the Tigers made a great effort to meet members of the community while recruiting to grow the team, club and sport. In fact, the Tigers set up a table at one of the City of Centennial’s Summer Series events where they chatted with Mayor Stephanie Piko (lower right photo).

A very special thank you goes to our women who could not attend the July 24 match in San Francisco. They stepped up and recruited all day at the Tough Mudder in Littleton. Thank you Rachel Hottor, Kristin Holland, Ruth Fernandes, Steph Sasz, Kim Dickey, Dot Wheeler, Diedra Tafoya, Andi de Alfonso Ortega and Alexis Koo for working together at the Tough Mudder Saturday!
