This week at the Talking Shop

Wow, what a week in the Talking Shop! I am nearly all talked out.

Thanks to everyone who called in to see us and helped to bring our Talking Shop to life!

We talked about food as part of MEA council’s Kitchen Table Talks.

I caught up with the Eco Rangers and found that we had a lot in common!

We had a second chat about how to support biodiversity in Carrickfergus (plans are afoot!).

We talked festivals, arts, culture and dogs.

And I had a fascinating chat with a lady who heard about us from Good Morning Carrickfergus about living abroad, the market, local radio and lots of other interesting stuff.

On Wednesday, Lynn hosted a group of crocheters who used to meet in the shop when it was Parlour Yarns. More on that in another newsletter.

Carrick after Covid

It’s clear that people’s lives have changed as a result of the pandemic and lockdowns. We’re hearing that over and over again in the shop.

We’ve been asked to hold an online conversation about the impact of Covid.

If you’d like to join us on the evening of 11 August at 7pm, reply to this newsletter and I’ll send you the zoom link on the day.

We’re thinking about doing a survey to capture information from lots more people. It can be hard to find good quality information about how people live their lives in Carrick - and how they would like to live their lives.

What questions do you think we should ask? Reply to this newsletter if you have any ideas you’d like to share.

If you didn’t get in for a chat and would like to, let me know and we can arrange some more online or in person conversations.

Wildest Dream Postcards - what next?

We've received more than 100 Wildest Dreams postcards since our amazing team of volunteer posties started delivering them at the end of March. We need your help to identify themes in the dreams and work out what we can do together next to make some of those dreams a reality.

We’re hosting 5 conversations in August and we’re hoping you can join one (or more!)

• Thursday, 12 August from 7-8pm

• Friday 13 August, from 11-12.30pm

• Saturday 14, August from 11-12.30pm

• Thursday 19 August from 7-8.30pm

• Friday, 20 August from 11-12.30pm

These conversations are all listed on our website and if you go to any event, you can add it to your calendar if you click on the Google Calendar or iCal Export links.

Music in the Courtyard Garden

Music has been a big theme coming through from the Wildest Dreams postcards and we’re responding to that by working with local musicians to put on events in the Courtyard’s Secret Garden outside our shop.

Carrick Sing will be back on Tuesday from 3-4pm and 7-8pm in The Courtyard Garden just outside our shop. Everyone is welcome, even if you think you can’t sing!

The Gasworks Traditional Music Society are joining us in the Courtyard garden on Saturday 14 August from 2-4pm

And we’ve confirmed The Flame N’Ukes for the 14th August from 12-2pm.

We’re delighted to tell you that Carrick has been selected by Mencap as one of 9 places across the UK that will help to make the UK to be the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.

We’re going to be working with local groups including the Gateway Clubs and Mencap to help make this vision a reality in Carrick.
