Mussel Biology and Ecology Class

Thursday, August 5th from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm
Fee: $40 per person - 5 hours CE Credit

Let’s “Mussel Up” to the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge for this brand  new TNP Continuing Education course teaming the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to provide instruction on the life, ecology and conservation efforts of these amazing aquatic species. Join us as TWRA mussel biologist David Sims conducts a 5 hour field class at the confluence of the Duck and Tennessee Rivers.  Past surveys have found 35 species of mussels along one mile of refuge shoreline at this location making it the perfect place to learn about and identify multiple species.   Instructor: David Sims, TWRA Mussel Biologist

REGISTRATION is open to TNP Students and Alumni, as well as, the general public. Bring your lunch, water, shoes that can get wet and muddy, hat and sunscreen. Come prepared to get wet, at least from the waist down as we will be “toe digging” for mussels.

Fungi: Mushrooms & Toadstools — An Introductory Workshop


Date:  September 18, 2021
Time:  9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Location:  Cumberland Mountain State Park
Cost:   $65 TNP Students and Alumni and $85 for general public

Class limited to 12 participants

Description: 
Ubiquitous, unassuming, and unusual, fungi play critical - typically overlooked - roles in our environment.  This 6-hour workshop explores their life histories, infinite variety, and ecological impact.  Students will collect specimens and identify species using both readily observable morphology and the examination of unique characteristics through microscopes. 


Waterfowl Biology and Wetland Ecology Workshop


Date:  October 30, 2021 from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm
Fee: $50 per person - 5 hours CE Credit

Description: 
2 hours of classroom time will be followed by heading out to the heart of the Duck River Bottoms wetland area for a look at wetland habitat, management for waterfowl, waterfowl identification and their conservation needs.  Students will be riding in a UTV for portions of the class and knee boots or muck boots are recommended.
