Collective Journal Vol. 2: Visible Meditations features “non-material” collections by four Miami-based artists: Chris Friday, Anna Goraczko, Juan Requena, and Ronald Sanchez. Their works are inspired by abstract concepts such as time, collective memories, and environmental concerns.

Juan Requena’s Untitled (Plastic bag quilt) demonstrates his life and cultural experience in Mumbai, India from 2012 to 2019. The quilt is made of our most familiar daily waste: plastic bags. Requena’s practice has always surrounded the archival aspect of objects and the production process. His artwork resonates with the modern urban lifestyle and weaves his days back in India together. Similar to collecting memories, Supplement Archive by Chris Friday explores identity and black culture through a lens of desire and longing. Friday relies heavily on information online, accumulating people’s reactions and behaviors toward pop culture and shared experiences. Sanchez’s installation displays collected objects he used for production: empty paint cans, can lids, brushes, and more industrial materials. His work Lid #, presents the process of art-making. By assembling the creative moments from both the perspectives of the maker and the viewer, Sanchez turns process documentation into the artwork itself. Lastly, Goraczko gathered random materials from her old house to make prints as documentation of her connection with her inheritance. Interested in discovering the family history, the artist started to assemble objects and notes she found in the house she grew up in. Her work Ascended Edits is a proof of self-identity and a collection of intimate storytelling.

Chris Friday (Miami, FL 1987) is a mixed-media artist based in Miami Florida. Implementing a chalkboard aesthetic, a great deal of attention is given to the investigation of the representations and perceptions of black bodies in media and society. Identifying these perspectives and their origins, questioning their legitimacy, and offering possible solutions is priority in her work.

Anna Goraczko (Miami, FL 1984) is a visual artist living and working in Miami. Goraczko works closely with found objects, fabrics and cyanotypes. She participated in several group exhibitions in various venues, including ArtServe Fort Lauderdale, Ker Gallery, Serendipity Labs, Miami Beach Urban Studios and many other galleries in Chicago.
