TURNING BELLINGEN SHIRE AROUND
Labor has committed to turning around Bellingen Shire’s faltering economy following the release of data showing significant declines in key economic indicators over the past five years.
Official government data released by Labor shows key economic indicators for the shire have all fallen in the past five years.
The number of jobs in the shire decreased, the number of people in jobs shrunk, unemployment has risen, economic output is slightly down, and tourism income has fallen significantly.
All key economic indicators were trending down before the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic. In many cases, regional NSW has been growing while Bellingen Shire has contracted.

Comments attributable to Andrew Woodward, Candidate for Mayor and Councillor
The economic data tells a sorry story for Bellingen Shire in the past five years.
Even before the pandemic hit we we’re going backwards. We have to turn things around.
We are pro-workers, pro-jobs and pro-small businesses.
We want to increase the number of jobs in tourism, construction, industry and services.
We want to restore tourism to pre-pandemic levels in ways that work for residents and nature.
We need more housing stock to generate construction, creating jobs and addressing the shortage of accommodation.
Plenty can be done to stimulate industry, including manufacturing and agriculture.
If we get the tourism, construction and industry programs right, jobs in services will follow.
We will also forge closer links with Coffs Harbour City Council on job creation, economic development and tourism. When Coffs does well, Bellingen Shire does well.
