DNALabs News

The pandemic has transformed the way the world works and possibly in some ways those changes are here to stay.  As we start planning our return to the office, there is still some hesitancy in some despite being fully vaccinated.

We are not only going back to the office, we are going back to normal life. Back to meeting our colleagues face to face, back to attending conferences and events, back to enjoying lunch, coffee or a drink after work.  And with this, we get to again be able to look forward to travelling on our next vacation.

Let’s put the pandemic behind us and move forward to a normal life.

If anyone is struggling, we are here to help.  The DNALabs team is committed to developing safe and useful genetic testing products helping everyone know more about themselves.  And let’s not forget that knowledge is power!

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

“And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.”

Some may remember the famous quote written by the 20th century English Writer, John Masefield and I thought it relevant today as the world begins to see light again after an exceptionally long time in the dark to acknowledge a paradigm shift forward.

Our company has not merely persevered, we have excelled in the past year in the face of a world crisis unlike any ever seen. The Covid pandemic, which destroyed much of the world’s economy, brought unprecedented challenges to our business as well. Yet, quick, and decisive action led by our team and founders with a concentrated effort assured our customers and stakeholders that we would emerge through this crisis not only intact but stronger.

How Genes Can Influence Our Physical Fitness?

With the 2021 presentation of the 2020 Olympic Games finally getting underway, and with indoor fitness studios and gyms finally opening up again after being shut down since last fall (at least here in Ontario), we’ve got physical fitness on our minds! We all know how important exercise is when it comes to optimizing health and wellbeing, not only for our physical fitness, but also our mental wellbeing. This is especially important after the difficult year many of us have had with lock-downs, businesses shutting down, being socially distant from our extended families and friends, being socially quarantined (often times in close quarters) with immediate family, seeing work and school move from lively social environments to computer screens, and of course many of us were affected either directly or indirectly by illness, hospitalizations, and death related to Covid-19.

Does going back to work make you anxious? Your genes may help to explain why

As businesses start to open and we find our new normal, for some, the lasting effects from isolation may take more time to heal. Feelings of anxiety, depression, and worry are more common for some. Genetic susceptibility combined with major life stressors can impact our mental health. In this article, I review how genetic testing can help you to understand your risk and strategies to intervene and manage your mood holistically.

Neurotransmitter pathways influence brain chemistry, affecting mood, personality, and mental health. While these pathways are complex, genetic variations in enzymes that influence the availability of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline are linked to susceptibilities to anxiety and depression. Polymorphisms in the COMT gene impact dopamine metabolism and account for about 60% of the metabolic degradation of dopamine and neurotransmission.

Back to Reality

FINALLY! The time we have all been waiting for has come. For many, life is starting to feel more back to “normal” rather than the “new normal” we got used to for many months. Restrictions are starting to be lifted now that more and more people are getting their COVID-19 vaccinations. Doctors are finally seeing more patients in person, gyms are reopening along with salons, restaurants and stores, social gatherings are taking place again and the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, the “new normal” also brought an increase in mental health issues in individuals from all ages: from young children to adults. However, despite that most places are starting to go back to normal, unfortunately these mental health issues are not disappearing just yet. After being locked up for nearly 2 years, many individuals are still experiencing a rise in anxiety as well as a new heightened sense of social anxiety that has come with social gatherings after such an extensive amount of time in isolation. While this may sound ironic as we have all been long awaiting this day, it is unfortunately the harsh reality we now live in today. Luckily, there are many ways we can manage both our own mental health, the mental health of our loved ones, and the mental health of our friends, colleagues, and patients whether it is through medication or lifestyle style changes.
