Onyx Monthly Newsletter August 2021

Onyx Leadership Team

August is here! Where did the year go?!

While it’s the last full month of summer, there are a lot of ways we can add new thoughts, new goals, and new beginnings for the last quarter of the year to our to-do lists.

We begin the month with National Sisters Day on August 1st, celebrating the unique bond between sisters: whether that’s celebrating the sisterhood with your siblings or appreciating the bonds of sisterhood with those that you hold near and dear to your heart. Sisterhood can look different for everyone and we honor whatever way that looks for you!

We will also acknowledge and continue to fight for Black Women’s Equal Pay Day on August 3rd. According to equalpaytoday.org, “Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is the approximate day a Black woman must work into the new year to make what white non-Hispanic man made at the end of the previous year. Based on ACS Census data, the 2021 wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men is $0.63 (cents).” We stand with our sisters of color and will continue to support each other to make sure we all receive what is rightfully ours, and what we rightfully deserve.

Keeping to the theme of supporting women and equality, August 26th marks Women’s Equality Day, a day in which in 1973 a bill was passed in New York to designate this day every year, and to bring attention to the continued efforts towards full equality, even outside of this day.

Although we are in 2021, we still have a long way to go. Our voices matter.

Still at the forefront of the mental health conversations within media and the community, the Onyx team continues to bestow upon the public their extensive knowledge of mental health as it pertains to ideals around prioritizing mental health, setting boundaries, and Onyx’s mission in 2021.
