Viva Naná Vasconcelos!

Tomorrow, Monday August 2nd, at 5PM CST, Arcomusical Artistic Director Gregory Beyer joins Percussão Brasileira to pay tribute to the great Naná Vasconcelos (1944-2016), whose berimbau wizardry is a driving force behind Arcomusical's mission. Beyer will be joined by Brazilian documentary filmmaker Paschoal Samora and Brazilian orchestral conductor, Gil Jardim, to discuss Naná's enduring legacy for all of us.

If you aren't familiar with Samora's documentary, "O Diário de Naná," it is worth watching!

Percussão Brasileiro is a new web platform created by Brazilian percussionist and composer, Carlos Dos Santos

The conversation will be broadcast live on Percussão Brasileiro's YouTube Channel.

New Arcomusical Score Publications!

Arcomusical NFP has been busy working through a series of new score publications to make available through our website!

In this newsletter, we would like to feature Orkun Akyol's uniquely colorful tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim in this quinet, "isto é muito natural."

Orkun wrote this piece for us during the Arcomusical Composer Initiative at University of California Davis. Of his piece and his experience, he writes:

“Isto é muito natural” (Portuguese, “its only natural”), is a quote from Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Desafinado,” one of my favorite bossa novas. I use small melodic and harmonic fragments from Jobim’s composition in a very subtle manner. Desafinado means “out of tune,” and I played around with this notion primarily by means of “pressure strokes,” a technique in which the performer presses their stick into the wire to generate a slightly muted and subtle pitch. Organized in two halves, the first half presents these pressure strokes, harmonics, bowing, and other extended techniques. The second half presents a polyrhythmic gesture inspired by the basic berimbau toques of capoeira.” - Orkun Akyol
