In this newsletter, we would like to feature Orkun Akyol's uniquely colorful tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim in this quinet, "isto é muito natural." 

Orkun wrote this piece for us during the Arcomusical Composer Initiative at University of California Davis. Of his piece and his experience, he writes:

““Isto é muito natural” (Portuguese, “its only natural”), is a quote from Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Desafinado,” one of my favorite bossa novas. I use small melodic and harmonic fragments from Jobim’s composition in a very subtle manner. Desafinado means “out of tune,” and I played around with this notion primarily by means of “pressure strokes,” a technique in which the performer presses their stick into the wire to generate a slightly muted and subtle pitch. Organized in two halves, the first half presents these pressure strokes, harmonics, bowing, and other extended techniques. The second half presents a polyrhythmic gesture inspired by the basic berimbau toques of capoeira.” - Orkun Akyol
