ISPRA launches six new tidal stations for the Italian national alert system for tsunamis
The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) completed the installation of six new tidal stations able to monitor the sea level and sea state with high precision during severe operating conditions. The stations, located offshore in Calabria, Sardinia, and Sicily, are designed to provide timely alerts and confirm potential tsunamis and other sea-related hazards that can affect the southern coasts of Italy. Mercator Ocean International will continue to implement the Copernicus Marine Service for the next 7 years
After successfully steering the Copernicus Marine Service for the past seven years, Mercator Ocean International will continue to operate the European-funded service for 2021-2027. During this period of time, marking the next phase of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth Observation programme, the Copernicus Marine Service will focus on improving data collection and dissemination in key strategic areas including marine biology, climate and coastal regions, and the Arctic; enhancing support to EU policies and expanding its user base beyond Europe and in emerging blue markets; and capitalizing on digital developments. NOC takes part in new Atlantic expedition
Scientists from the UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC) joined a research team from the iAtlantic project on a collaborative expedition to map the ecosystems and natural processes in the deep sea around the Cabo Verde islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. The expedition, led by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), also provides early-career scientists with the opportunity to gain hands-on training at sea. Learn more about the expedition here.

DG MARE adds PLOCAN to the group of experts of the European Ports Forum
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) added the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) to the expert group of the European Ports Forum Commission, as part of the subgroup ‘Ports as hubs for a sustainable blue economy’. The main aim of the subgroup is to exchange information on blue economy policies and initiatives, and provide advice and information analysis to the Commission on the sustainable blue economy with an impact on sea ports. CMCC brings climate science, sustainable development and ocean exploration at Expo 2020 Dubai
The Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) will contribute to Expo 2020 Dubai (1 October 2021-31 March 2022) by offering visitors the opportunity to see ocean forecasting in real time and get a unique glimpse into global climate change. It will also provide weather-marine data, oceanographic modelling and marine applications, as well as expert talks on topics such as the Global Coastal Ocean and CoastPredict. Read more here.

Marine Institute scientists test new HABscope
Scientists at the Marine Institute and the National University of Ireland, Galway are conducting a pilot test to study the HABscope, a microscope with an attached iPod which uses artificial intelligence to detect harmful algal bloom species. The HABscope system, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and funded by NASA, complements satellite technology to provide early wide-scale warnings of harmful algal blooms and is expected to have an important impact on aquaculture, fisheries and tourism. Have your say on the new Marine Strategy Framework Directive by 21 October
On 22 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation in light of the revision of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) – the European Union’s main tool to protect the marine environment – by mid-2023. Citizens, institutions, and organizations in the public and private sectors are invited to express their views on the potential objectives and priorities of the new MSFD until 21 October 2021. European Commission adopts practical guide for EU cooperation on coast guard activities
The handbook improves cross-border and cross-sector collaboration between EU civilian and military authorities supporting coast guard functions: the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). The document, which compiles the services and information available via the three agencies, aims to foster synergies and avoid duplication of efforts for a safe and secure maritime space. GOOS launches new Ocean Observing System Report Card for 2021
The Observations Coordination Group of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) launched the new Ocean Observing System Report Card for 2021, which provides key insights into the status of GOOS. The 2021 report focuses on the following main areas: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ocean observation activities; monitoring ocean oxygen and deoxygenation; and the overall status of the GOOS and ways to meet key demands for ocean information. The Ocean Decade Advisory Board - call for expert members nominations
The Decade Advisory Board will assist the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in coordinating the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Board will provide advice on strategic aspects of the Decade implementation – such as reviews of the Decade progress, identifying gaps and opportunities, data stewardship strategies, resource mobilization strategies, and the development of a monitoring and evaluation framework of the Decade – as well as operational support to facilitate the endorsement process of Decade Actions. Digital Ocean Convention 2021
The event will take place on 25-26 August 2021 in Rostock, Germany. It will bring together representatives from business, science and politics to discuss the latest developments and trends in digital underwater technology. Accelerating Climate Action: A just transition in a post-COVID era
The Italian Society for Climate Sciences (SISC) will host its 9th Annual Conference on 22-24 September 2021 as a virtual event. The conference will provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussing new advances and research results in the fields of science and management of climate change. Key topics include climate change and trends, climate-related impacts on natural and human systems, climate policies and transition pathways towards sustainable development; climate action, big data, technology innovations, artificial intelligence and climate challenges. Mini international conference: Aquatic restoration & nature-based solutions
The conference, organized by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), will take place on 12-14 October 2021 in Oslo, with participants having the option to attend virtually. The event will focus on the science underpinning restoration actions and nature-based solutions to alleviate the pressure on aquatic ecosystems, ranging from marine coastal areas to freshwaters including rivers, lakes, and wetlands. 2nd Ocean Observers Workshop 2021
The event will take place virtually between 29 November and 1 December 2021. Its aim is to bring together ocean scientists and communicators, teachers, citizens involved in educational activities, and other stakeholders to share marine science educational resources and explore opportunities for international collaboration. Interested contributors are invited to submit an abstract until 12 September 2021. The workshop is organized by the Ocean Observers Working Group, jointly led by OceanOPS and Euro-Argo.
