Joseph who is from Houston Texas, has spent the last couple of years travelling New Zealand exploring the world of fungi –  he has been searching for new bioluminescent fungi. You can check out his writing at: nzfungi.com

 Speakers Thursday Night Programme
We are still looking to fill Thursday night slots.  If you or someone you know has a trip or something of interest to share (an ability to take great photos, first aid, knowledge of tramping gear, a love of dehydrating food etc) please contact Tina on tinaanderson1673@gmail.com.  Please remember this doesn’t have to be a long talk/presentation.  20 minutes is great, it will give people a chance to talk more afterwards.
Also, with the noticed reduction in those attending Thursday’s lately we are also wondering if we need to have more of a focus on tramping related matters so as an idea, please think “would I read about this in a copy of Wilderness Magazine or FMC Bulletin.  If not, maybe its not a topic for the OTMC Thursday night programme.
The OTMC meet socially every Thursday evening in our Clubrooms at 3 Young Street, St Kilda.
Doors open from 7.30pm, meeting starts at 8.00pm

Upcoming Day Trips

8 August
Rosella Ridge
Leader: Tomas Sobek
Starting from Woodhaugh Gardens at 9am, we will drive to Silver Peaks Semple Rd car park (start of Green Ridge). From there we decide on a suitable loop over Rosella Ridge taking into account the group and the weather conditions. Rosella Ridge can be a fun trip in the heart of Silver Peaks, though be prepared for some mud, steep tracks, and exposed sections on the tops. We will also do a few hundred vertical meters (altitude gain & loss).

this is a medium level trip, please bring $8 to give for car sharing.
Any questions contact Tomas on info@tomassobekphotography.co.nz
15 August
Stone Hill and Purehurehu Point

This trip proves you do not have to go far from the city to get stunning views. As a bonus you get to blow off the mid winter cobwebs with a walk up a nice steep hill.
We will ascend from the western side of Otago Harbour at Waipuna Bay through farmland to Stone Hill.  On a clear day there are magical views of the harbour, so bring your camera.  Next is a comfortable amble down to Purehurehu Point to visit a well appointed cave dwelling and lunch on one of the beaches. The return journey will be over a similar route. You should be back in town about 3 pm.  Bring whatever water you need as there is none enroute.

Leader: Gordon Tocher  ph 021 677 818,
Start Time 9 a.m. at the Clubrooms, grade is medium, Trip cost $5 to carpool

If you live in the Port Chalmers area it may make sense to travel direct to the start point without going to the clubrooms first. Phone for instructions or if you have any questions.
Non-members are welcome on OTMC Day Trips, but must contact the leader listed prior to the trip.
Meeting location and time is as noted in the trip description, or contact the trip leader.
Trip Grades - Walking Time: (E) Easy

Upcoming Weekend Trips

14-15 August
Snowcaving
Leader: Richard Pettinger (03 487 9488 or 027 950 4517)
A trip for OTMC members and those who can look after themselves OK in alpine areas. Emergency snow shelters could be the only form of accommodation to save your life in a dire situation. We'll make our own place to stay out of the wind and the worst of the cold. And have fun, as usual. This trip has been run most years since the 1960s, and we will go, snow permitting, to the Old Man Range as it typically offers the best sites. Leave at 7 AM Saturday morning, back late afternoon Sunday Trip fare is $20.

28 - 29 August
Huxley Forks Family Trip

Leader: Brad Wilson
Grade: All
Meeting at the Clubrooms on SATURDAY MORNING 8am, driving up in private cars to the Ram Hill carpark, walking up past Monument Hut and then over the swing bridge and up to Huxley Forks (sleeps 6) Adult $5; Youth (11–17 years) $2.50; Child (0–10 years) free. We will take some tents in case the hut is full. To encourage kids along we will be going at a slow pace, and stopping often. The walk in is listed at 6 hours, 18km, but it is only 180m vertical. As the first half is a 4WD track, we should be able to cover that easily and also it will be a safe easy start to gauge progress and pace for the young ones (if we have suitable cars and the road is OK, we may shuttle for some of it). Plans will be a bit flexible subject to weather etc. The Huxley is a lovely little valley and has a nice mix of bush and views.
Contact Brad (021 334 562 or bradjohnwilson@hotmail.com) for more details.
Trip Grade is Easy/Medium.
Transport Cost $45 (no charge if you take your own family in your own car).
Hut price as above or annual hut pass.
