Perry-winkle Farms' potato season continues, we have now dug our tenth and final variety. The German Butterballs look great, this is a long-time favorite of ours so be sure to pick up some of those this week. As a refresher, we have one variety with red skin and pink flesh, six varieties with golden flesh, and three with white centers (there are only a few Chieftains left). We will have coolers full of arugula and basil. In the flower department, we will have bunches of celosias, bunches of lisianthus, and some sunflowers too. There will be a bucket of colorful zinnias, more gladiolus, and a rack full of mixed bouquets in two different sizes. You can also look forward to a good supply of eggs from Michael's pastured hens. We want to repeat that we need your used egg cartons. Please bring your gently used 12 packs (ours or grocery store ones).
Thank you! With gratitude,
Mike Perry and Cathy Jones

Beechcrest Farm is a magical, mystical place at the raw edge of life. I was driving a noisy tractor in a pasture this week and a bunch of cattle emerged from the woods where they laze in the shade to stand right in front of me with a sense of entitlement. “Come on people! This tractor’s bigger than y’all!” They got a nice life, but I know something they don’t. And then I buried in the manure pile an old hen who had died when she opened an eye in terror. On top of the manure pile thrives a dense jungle of high grasses. We are mindful participants in this cycle of death and life.

Chatham Extension Master Gardeners volunteers (EMGVs) will be at the market on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Talk to an EMG to get gardening advice, find out about the EMG Program and other Extension offerings, and pick up soil testing supplies. Extension Master Gardeners are local gardeners who volunteer their time and expertise to support Chatham County’s N.C. Cooperative Extension. EMGVs receive intensive training on a wide range of gardening topics and are prepared to answer your gardening questions with research-based, unbiased information from the land-grant university system. Types of gardening questions EMGVs can assist with include:
- What is wrong with my plants and what can I do about it?
- What or when should I plant?
- What is this weed or plant?
- What is that in my soil?
- What is this insect that I found on my plant?
- When should I prune?
