National Speaker on Risk Appropriate Maternal Care

Dr. Sarah Kilpatrick is an OB/GYN MFM at Cedar Sinai Medical Center and was one of the primary authors of  ACOG's Levels of Maternal Care Guidelines. The goal of levels of maternal care is to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by encouraging growth and maturation of sytems of care for the provision of risk-appropriate care specific to maternal health needs. Dr. Kilpatrick is widely recognized as one of the national leaders on the subject.

Parental Depression Screening

Perinatal depression affects the entire family, and if untreated, can have serious adverse effects. Universal screening of pregnant and postpartum mothers and fathers is recommended as a component of quality care and is considered best practice for infants and families. Despite these recommendations, significant gaps in screening practices exist across Nebraska. Participants from our Perinatal Family Mental Health Initiative will share how they have successfully implemented parental depression screening into their facilities.

Early Identification of Neonates Needing Hypothermia Treatment

Each year, newborns in Nebraska are missing the “window of opportunity” for timely therapeutic hypothermia or “cooling”, the only proven treatment for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Early identification and intervention of neonates suffering from HIE are critical to improving outcomes. Learn about current guidelines for therapeutic hypothermia and tools available to help identify these babies early.

Appropriate Use of Antibiotics for Newborns

Antibiotics are essential in fighting infections in newborns. But wide variations in antibiotic prescribing for newborn infections can result in short- and long-term adverse outcomes such as:
  • Mother-baby separation that interferes with bonding and successful breastfeeding
  • Creation of antibiotic resistant bacteria
  • Alterations in gut microbiome
  • Increased incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm newborns
  • Higher incidence of chronic conditions, including asthma, allergies, and obesity
Learn about recommended best practices to identify and treat newborns at risk for early onset sepsis.
Physicians, APPs and Nurse leaders: SAVE THE DATE for the NPQIC Annual Summit which will be held virtually on Friday, November 5th from 8:00am to 12:00pm. The cost will be $25. Stay tuned for registration information coming soon.

Reduction in Maternal Morbidity following AIM Safety Bundle Implementation

Severe morbidity among women with severe hypertension during pregnancy has decreased in Nebraska following implementation of the AIM safety bundle. There are 28 birthing hospitals actively participating in this NPQIC improvement initiative. Four quarters into the work, the rate dropped below 2.5% for the first time and has remained there for 3 consecutive quarters.
