WExp Restart

Thank you to everybody on the Restart Team, Maintenance, Training, and beyond, who worked so hard to ensure our base, boats, volunteers and procedures were all ready for the restart of client trips on 20th July - and to Bookings team for making sure we had some clients to take out!.

Trustees had confirmed and enhanced the recommendations of the team and the procedures we are now working will reflect our updated Risk Assessment and the decisions the Trustees made in a joint meeting with the Steering Group and Restart Team shortly before client trips recommenced.

We have already had a very wide variety of trips on all three boats, involving several care homes, a scout group, some family parties and a meditation group.   It is really good to see such a wide variety of clients allowing us to help them enjoy themselves on the water.

Naturally, we are improving the procedures as we receive feedback from clients and crew.  So please keep an eye on the COVID 19 operating procedures document for changes.  Changes so far have mostly centred around increases in the skippers’ discretion to assess situations and act accordingly.

It really has been a very long time since I have seen some of our volunteers.  I see some at the base and some on trip and, of course I have been in regular touch with the Trustees and management team via Zoom.  But so many, I have not seen at all for over a year.  So I am really looking forward to seeing you at our Summer social on Saturday 14 August.  Can’t wait!

TEAM UPDATES

IT Team
Brian Larkin writes......

This information is for all Wexp account users when creating, sharing or accessing Drive files. As from 13th September 2021 Google Workspace is implementing new security measures which may affect users' access to some files. This will depend on the permissions given to the file(s) on creation, and how they have been shared.

We have checked initially to see how many files may be affected, but so far we have not seen any. But, as this new measure does not come into operation until 13th September, we will not know the full effect until then.

Anyone finding they cannot access a file after that date, provided they have permission to in the first place, should contact the IT Team at it-team@Wexp.org.uk , or the originator of the file..

We are currently in the process of having a look at the setup and working of Drive, there are many files that are duplicated and cause problems in identifying which is the most up to date, many files are old versions and should be archived. The file structure is in question and needs modifying to meet current standards. There is also the potential for Drive training sessions to be set up to help users gain the knowledge to be able to use the many facilities within Google Workspace to their advantage.

Watch this space.

Bookings

We are delighted with the response to our recent re-opening and we are FULLY booked for September. To our amazing Volunteers keep you eyes open for the regular requests for crewing. We so value your time and commitment to ensuring that these trips can go ahead.
Fundraising

What is the Big Give Christmas Challenge and why are we promoting this now?

The Big Give is a registered charity (1136547) and the UK's #1 match funding platform. It specialises in bringing charities, philanthropists and the public together to multiply their impact. The Big Give has raised over £156m for thousands of great causes through the power of match funding.

Your WExp Fundraising team (Lynn Margetts, Andrew Thomson and Sally Ash) has signed up to take part in the 2021 Big Give Christmas Challenge.   This gives us a great opportunity to secure £5k still needed for phase 1 of the long-anticipated wharf improvement which we hope will take place in the early months of 2022.  It’ll provide convenient marina posts adjacent to each of our existing three moorings meaning an end to trailing hoses and cables.  We hope that phase 2 will follow in short order to extend the wharf to accommodate the fourth boat.

Any charity donor is obviously keen to make sure that every penny they give works really hard, and the clever (if a bit complicated) scheme leverages ‘match’ funding for small donations from larger donors, specifically ‘Pledgers’ and ‘Champions’.

We have to work for the matched funding in two stages.

  1. By the 27th August, we need to collect a total of £1,250 in individual pledges from our own networks. Each pledge must be at least £100 to our Big Give Wharf (1) campaign, the pledge to be donated to WExp in December 2021. Pledgers have the comfort of knowing that every £100 they pledge will be doubled by the campaign.

  2. From 30th November to 7th December, the Big Give runs a nationwide campaign to promote charity-giving by smaller donors using the promise that every pound donated will be doubled. We will have our own page on the Big Give Christmas Challenge website and donations made via this page during the first week of December will be doubled. Our target for the total of individual donations during this phase is £2,500. See how Big Give promoted this in last year’s campaign.

How can I help?

Before 27th August, drop an email to fundraising@wexp.org.uk or call Lynn on 07775568370 if you’d like to help by making a pledge of at least £100 to our Wharf (1) campaign (or with suggestions of anyone you know who you think might be able to help)

Then stand by to help us promote the wider public appeal between 30th November and 7th December - we’ll keep you updated via Crew News.

THANK YOU!   Lynn, Sally & Andrew

Kings  Langley Yarn Bombing raises money for WExp!
Our friends at the Kings Langley Arts and Crafts Society (KLACS) have selected us as their charity for the summer yarn bombing which is currently on display in Kings Langley High Street.  There is a mix of knitting, painting and creative writing all on the theme of the countryside with a focus on Kings Langley scenes.  The yarn bombing is put up every year at Christmas and in the summer bringing cheer to locals and visitors alike.  Many of this year's work has a canal theme showing just how important our favourite canal is to the village.  KLACS have kindly agreed to donate the panel with the boat and farm yard on to us to hang in the Visitor Centre after the yarn bombing comes down at the end of August - go take a look for yourself, the details is amazing (and see if you can spot the interloper!).  Donations are being made using a QR code which is hanging near the work and also available here and on both our and the KLACS Facebook pages.  Another great example of the great things that can  happen when two local charities work together.

Thank you KLACS, we appreciate your support!
