__   3-Year Cultural Creative Development Program: 2021 Participant

Our 3-Year Cultural Creative Development Program has forged ahead since it’s inception in 2019 with our inaugural enrolee Kane Brunjes heading into his 3rd year and Stevie O’Chin heading into her 2nd year.

It is our great pleasure to mention that our 2021 enrolee, Ngarabal man, Well Born, has signed on the dotted line.

We are very excited to now have a full house so to speak, and the calibre of this young cohort is ridiculous.

Birrunga said of the recent signing,

"Well Born is a young man with a lot to offer. We were introduced by BSAF’s main man, Lincoln Savage, during this year's hugely successful Brisbane Street Art Festival and he made an immediate impression.

From there it has been our CEO Suzie who has championed us looking at Well Born as our 2021 enrolee. Suzie is no slouch at spotting talent, so after approaching Lincoln as our point of introduction to share our intentions, a meeting was set up and the synergies began to show themselves in both quality and quantity.

Well Born has a strong musical background to draw on which is something I share with him and bodes well for interesting developments. As I’ve said before, we do not look for nor engage with the usual suspects in what we do. Well Born, Stevie and Kane are so far from that demographic its incredibly satisfying and humbling.

Watch out next for our welcome Well Born show coming up featuring at least Kane, Stevie, Well Born and possibly an old Koori."

Welcome aboard Brother from everyone at Birrunga Gallery & Dining!

__   Callum Young, Boxing Trainer

In the world of professional art, balance is the key element that sorts out the also-rans from the long gamers.

It is something that is not taught as a key element of professional practice and framework development outside of a very few sources.

In producing art, just as it is in the ring, you have to own every move you make and live with the consequences, in either arena there really is nowhere to hide.

In late 2020, Birrunga was convinced by close friend, Tom Young, to come along to Saturday morning training sessions at family owned and operated, Beat Boxing Gym, in Morningside.

Birrunga then began training with Tom’s son, Callum Young. Birrunga’s request was that he wanted to focus purely on technique and was prepared to put in the time and effort to develop disciplines and skills in the ring.

In short, it was all natural.

Callum is a young man of great consideration, manners, patience and respect. He is a talented boxer in his own right, having taken out the QLD Novice Championship earlier this year. One thing led to another and Birrunga approached Callum to consider including Kane Brunjes and Stevie O’Chin as charges to train as a part of their 3-Year Cultural Creative Development Program with Birrunga Gallery & Dining.

The results have been extraordinary across the board. This post really is a recommendation for those of our beloved followers to consider signing up with Callum to add balance into their lives from some incredibly rewarding activity on a regular basis.

We’ll let Callum’s own words round out this short article:

"Hey Birrunga - sorry for the delayed response. Overall, off the top of my head, in my own words I’d say I promote boxing technique and fitness with a variety of different hands on training sessions from an amateur boxer’s POV with aims to not only improve boxing related training but overall quality of life. The thing that drives me the most is that I’m extremely passionate as this is my life - and that resonates with my training. I know how lucky I am to be doing it and I don’t take it for granted."

Beat Boxing Gym is a family event, positive attitudes and behaviours are thick in the place. There is a really solid gender balance present in the clientele as well as the staff.

UPCOMING __
__ Custom Surfboard Collaboration

We’ve been sitting on news of one of our projects that is getting close to completion.

In early 2021 a number of conversations began on possible synergies between a pair of dyed-in-the-wool outsiders: BIrrunga and iconic master surfboard designer/shaper Geoff McCoy.

These boards were commissioned to be designed and shaped by Geoff with Birrunga to produce the story for the hull and deck of two boards. These progress shots show the hulls of both boards done, with the decks to be completed in the near future.

COVID has slowed things down significantly so there’s plenty of consideration gone into creating these boards. Stay tuned for an update on the finished products and further news on the rest of the project.

__ Bathurst Mural
The Wall, Before.
Cnr Ribbon Gang Lane and William Street, Bathurst.
Birrunga has been approached to produce a mural on his home Country in Bathurst NSW as a key part of a local initiative to bring art into the public space of Bathurst.

He immediately consulted with his Elders from the Wiradyuri Traditional Owners Central West Aboriginal Corporation for permission and counsel regarding the prospective work.

Birrunga also asked his Elders to consider allowing Kane Brunjes and Stevie O’Chin to contribute to the process of developing and executing the mural as a part of their enrolment in our 3-Year Cultural Creative Development Program (CCDP).

We’re pleased to announce that all has gone well and that dates have been set for work to commence in September 2021.

Hopefully the current COVID situation in NSW will have run its course to allow the state to be available again for QLD to visit without the need to isolate on return.

Either way, the ink is dry on the contract - production meetings have begun in earnest and there’s a really cool road trip vibe buzzing throughout the CCDP crew.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Our venue serves as a safe space for everyone to enjoy.
