NEWS

In case you missed it there was an article in the Daily Telegraph: "Bury them: Anger at no change over cruise terminal plans. Despite the pandemic’s impact on the cruise industry, the NSW Government has said there’s no change to its position on the controversial third Sydney terminal." WELL THEY GOT THAT RIGHT WE HAVE NOT CHANGED OUR POSITION EITHER!

Then this from the SMH: “Mr Stokes said he also had “real concerns” about placing a cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay, south of Port Botany." https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/absolutely-not-minister-doesn-t-want-cruise-ships-at-white-bay-20210322-p57cxc.html

On the international front large cruise ships will be banned from entering the Venice lagoon as of August 1. It follows years of warnings they risk causing irreparable damage to Venice's ecosystem, let’s hope we can stop the Yarra Bay terminal before it even opens!
Keep sharing those great stories with us!

KAMAY FERRY WHARF PROJECT AT LAPA

Looks like we have another battle looming – the Kamay Ferry Wharf Project - New Ferry Wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell. Is the first step for the Cruise Ship terminal in Yarra Bay taking place right under our noses?  The Environmental Impact Study (EIS) has now come out, this describes everything about the project and its impacts and people have until 11 August to put in submissions to object – you can include some of this information

The NSW Government are proposing to build a wharf at both La Perouse and Kurnell for a ferry service to operate.  There will be 13 months of construction (aka destruction) with lots of pile driving as the wharf is going out 140m out into Frenchman’s bay with a 40x10m wharf head at the end, so a big project that will naturally have BIG environmental impacts.
•         there will be an impact on the White’s Seahorse (Sydney Seahorse) that is an Endangered species, as well as weedy sea dragons, nudibranchs, turtles and seals  etc.
•         the construction process will destroy some of the Threatened seagrass habitat that the Seahorse lives on which is very sensitive &will probably not return-confirmed in the EIS study.
•         there will be a loss of water clarity during the 13 months of construction which will affect diving and may affect the fauna and flora of the area around Bare Island as it is only 300m from the wharf.
•         the size of wharf is an overdevelopment. It is 5 times the size of the previous wharf and goes out 140m into the bay plus it has a huge wharf head. A smaller wharf would be more appropriate and have a smaller environmental impact.
•         there will be an increase in large commercial vessels as well as the ferries operating and this will effect wildlife.
•         the sediment stirred up from 13 months of construction and piling will result in a loss of water quality and clarity which will affect the recreational use of the bay
•         it is a misuse of $17million tax payer money to reinstate a 40 year old ferry service in order to get more people visiting Captain Cook’s landing place at Kurnell (that is the stated objective)
•         it will increase traffic congestion and parking issues at La Perouse -they claim it won’t
•         it will have effects on nearby heritage listed Bare island which they don’t seem to have really considered when it is only 300m away
If you have concerns like we do PLEASE send in a submission (which is really a simple letter) by 11th August – submissions close in 15 days

And while you are at it please consider emailing these NSW Ministers to tell them “hands off the bay, no ferry service in Kamay”
