"One of the nation’s largest teachers unions on Tuesday vowed to defend members who are punished for teaching an “honest history” of the United States, a measure that’s intended to counter the wave of states seeking to limit classroom discussion on race and discrimination.

In a virtual address to members of the American Federation of Teachers, president Randi Weingarten said the union is preparing litigation and has a legal defense fund “ready to go.” She promised to fight “culture warriors” who attempt to limit lessons on racism and discrimination by labeling it as critical race theory.

At least six states have passed new laws limiting how race can be taught in the classroom, and similar proposals are being considered in more than a dozen others. Many of the bills are intended to bar the teaching of critical race theory — an academic framework that examines history through the lens of racism. It centers on the idea that racism is systemic in the nation’s institutions and that they function to maintain the dominance of white people in society."

"The federal government considers housing affordable when a person or family needs to spend no more than 30% of their income on it. That price tag includes rent or mortgage payments as well as utilities.

Spending more than that may make it difficult for a person to pay for other everyday needs — food, transportation and health care. That's called being "cost burdened," according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Those spending 50% or more are considered “severely cost burdened.”

The CBI report said there to be about 44,000 cost-burdened families in Greater Cincinnati.

[...] There are all kinds of various reasons why, all kinds of reasonable reasons why people may need affordable housing ... These are just people doing their very best, many of them working full-time jobs just trying to put food on the table for their families"

Today was the groundbreaking ceremony for Cincinnati's first LGBTQ-friendly affordable senior housing complex located on Apple Street in Northside--just a block away from Caracole offices! Linda Seiter, our executive director, was on hand to deliver brief remarks and help break ground, alongside developers Pennrose Companies and NEST - Northsiders Engaged in Sustainable Transformation as well as other partner organizations, on the new construction. The development name, John Arthur Flats, pays tribute to the late John Montgomery Arthur, a Cincinnati native and husband of the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage in the United States. The project is slated to be completed by July 2022.

Positive outcomes from a housing project:

"A new study found that a Columbus project to help maternal and infant birth outcomes should be used more broadly to improve health access and housing.
[...] Housing stability also improved under the study, which participants lacked before they began the project. Having affordable and safe housing removed one element of insecurity in the group and limited time in homeless shelters.

“Families with ongoing rental assistance (rather than time-limited assistance that ended at exit) faced a much lower threat of instability when they left the study,” according to the policy institute."

There's a LOT going on in Lower Price Hill and Mike Templeton has unpacked much of it for us in this week's blog post. As the neighborhood bounces back from COVID-19, they are seeing some changes happening - both good and bad. One exciting addition will be Meiser's Fresh Grocery & Deli (LPH) opening! It will provide the community with fresh, affordable produce, groceries, and more. On the other hand, the neighborhood faces rising concerns over developers coming in to gentrify this historically Appalachian neighborhood.

Good Afternoon,

I am writing to inform you, Ladonna Rappold Dingess, aka Buffy, Recovery Director, will be retiring today.

Buffy joined our team over ten years ago. She is responsible for developing the Recovery department into the program it is today. Buffy has been a tireless advocate for our clients, fighting for recovery services and treatment when few resources were available for people experiencing homelessness. The program's success results from Buffy's focus on meeting grant outcomes, ensuring clinical standards, and forging relationships with internal and external partners.

On behalf of us all, thank you for your incredible contribution to our organization, and we wish you a happy, healthy retirement.

From the State Board of Education:

"Ohio’s State Board of Education is being asked to remove a “limitation on verbal public participation” on the topics of “critical race theory” and the “1619 project” at a meeting Tuesday.

The term “critical race theory” has been used, typically by academics but more recently by conservatives, to discuss how supposedly race-neutral public policy can contribute to disparate socioeconomic outcomes on racial lines. The term’s origins come from the legal world, and pieces of legislation meant to stop the discussion of race as an impact on history have used the phrase “divisive concepts” instead.

[...] The AGs called on the U.S. Department of Education to “make clear that grants may not fund projects that are based on CRT, including any projects that characterize the United States as irredeemably racist or founded on principles of racism … or that purport to ascribe character traits, values, privileges, status, or beliefs, or that assign fault, blame, or bias, to a particular race or to an individual because of his or her race.”

The state of Ohio has previously said there has been very few complaints about the concept being taught in public schools."

Our Summer 360 campers learned yoga this summer! Busy Being Kids came in to teach our students, and one of them even got up into crow pose! Physical fitness and mindfulness are both important components of our programming, and basic yoga skills like breath control help students learn how to self-regulate. Namaste 💛
Black women and girls are often hypersexualized in the media, leaving them in rather vulnerable positions far more than that of white women. Alongside this often undiscussed issue, societal oppression may also leave Black women in dangerous positions which may result in domestic violence.

This is not okay, and it's our job to end it.

It may have been hot and humid, but it was still a beautiful day to gather as a parish outdoors as we celebrated World Day for Grandparents and Elders.
Our staff has been busy preparing for our "Prescription Fore Fun" Golf Outing for weeks! As we get ready for the big day tomorrow, here are 3 facts about what it's all for -- the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy.

💊 In 2020, the Charitable Pharmacy provided more than 73,000 prescriptions, valued at $11.6 million, to over 1,300 patients.

❌All services are provided to qualifying patients at no cost.

↩️ In the past year, the Charitable Pharmacy averted $3.8 million in costs from local health systems.

We're excited to see all of our golfers, community partners, and supporters tomorrow!
