Dear Friends of GIG,

We are excited to share with you updates on our projects and from our community!

Since we sent out our last newsletter, we hosted the first day of re:publica '21, and launched a Smart Clinic in Shubra el Khema, Egypt, with our partners MBM and Siemens. If you know people who could benefit from visiting the clinic or would like to get involved, be sure to share this with them!

Our Citizen science project, CoAct has been up to a whole lot;  a webinar on "Rethinking Science", a community hangout, and launching 3 open calls on gender equality.

Our friends at Procomum have also been taking on efforts to respond to the pandemic in a sustainable way. Training popular health workers, and redesigning the citizen lab to better be used by the community in these times.

Be sure to check out and follow Global Scale Up X on Instagram, and check out this amazing community of female founders!

And lastly, if you're reading this this, you've made it this far into 2021 which is no mean feat. Remember to be kind to yourself and those around you.

Cheers!

We are what we create together.

"Shubra El Khema Smart clinic in Egypt is now open!

GIG together with MBM (Masr Bela Marad, which translates as "Egypt without illness") an Egyptian NGO and the donation of Siemens AG and
Siemens Energy AG set up in Shubra El Khema (outskirts of Cairo, Egypt) a Smart clinic. This clinic is providing high-quality care for around 15,000 patients yearly in an area lacking access to healthcare.
The clinic is an example of participatory and inclusive development, where all partners are working together for a common goal - to improve access to health at a time when it is needed more than ever. Our aim is to establish the Careables programme in the Smart Clinic, to train
engineers, makers and designers together with doctors and nurses to improve the access to medical devices for all people."

Gig @ re:publica '21

Together with our partners Distributed Design Market Platforms (DDMP) we hosted the first day or re:publica '21, whose theme was "In the meantime" On behalf  of re:publica, GIG  prepared an online programme of speakers,  two online workshops and a meetup within the framework of re:publica 2'1. re:publica is Europe’s biggest conference on topics concerning digitisation and society, while also being one of the world’s most exceptional festivals on digital culture.

The opening session in our program was a conversation among Geraldine de Bastion, Sheilah Birgen, Jay Fajardo and Gabriela Agustini on re:publica and the Global Innovation Gathering.
Speakers included Reem Talhouk who unpacked notions of resilience and how humanitarian technologies contribute to dystopian futures for refugees. Mathilde Berchon who  spoke on the present and the future of 3D printing., Bart de Witte in conversation with Nick Couldry on the topic of Open Health data and Renata Avila who came in conversation with Paola Vilarreal on Smart Cities in South America. The topic on climate change has been discussed by FabLab Bhutan and Nepal Communitere whose work as makers spaces included projects that specifically address green and sustainable solutions.
We hosted two online workshops on the same day, one is ‘The remote control Lab’ where Tarek Omar presents Senet Lab — a new remote control lab environment for engineering and science education by Cairo Hackerspace. The second workshop was called ‘The Story of a Maker Microscope’ hosted by Obasegun Tekena from Vilsquare, who presented a transformation story on how they managed to turn an open design for a microscope into an off the shelf supermarket product, making science accessible and affordable.
The DDMP and GIG networks also gathered online for a meetup -watch party, which was followed by a moderated virtual discussion between speakers and members on the second day of the re:publica event.

CoAct "Rethinking Science" webinar

If you missed our webinar "Rethinking Science", you can now watch the full recording here: This time we discussed the framing of science by learning how scientifically rigor research is done outside academia.  We took a global perspective, learning from participatory research initiatives in different contexts (Brazil, Canada and Ghana).
