PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear SCWCA members and friends,

Summer is here and things are heating up and slowing down. How can that be? With the new Delta variant surging in our cities and scores of people refusing to get the vaccination, people are cautious again about going out and about. Just as the galleries were opening up with wonderful exhibitions. Opportunities to participate in exhibitions are on the rise. Make sure you look for calls for art on our national webpage, https://nationalwca.org/calls-for-art/. SCWCA will be hosting an open call in October, watch this space.

We are still holding Zoom meetings and I think this will probably be the wave of our future. The great success of our third Thursday Artist Talk has prompted more artists to present. In July, we had an amazing presentation from Kerrie Smith. The depth and breadth of her artistic career was very impressive. On August 19th we will be honored to have Sinan Revell present her work. She is
a multi-talented international painter, performer and musician. Make sure you tune in to her presentation. You won’t be disappointed. We will skip the month of September since it falls on a Jewish holiday.

I have been honored to be president of SCWCA for the past 4 years. With the help of our amazing board members, we have created a beautiful network of women. You are the most important part of our network. I encourage you to join us in our monthly board meetings the second Thursday of each month at 9:00 am.

We can always be reached at socalwomenscaucus@gmail.com.
As always, we stand together. We have much to be proud of as an organization and as artists. Look for opportunities to participate. Until we can see each other in person, please join us on Zoom.

Send information about your future exhibitions by the 15th of the month to scwcaenews@gmail.com. We are here to support and appreciate your accomplishments.

Be safe out there and see you on Zoom,
Shelley Heffler

President

Artist Talk - This month's artist talk on Thursday, August 19, 2021 is with Sinan Revell,  a Chinese Australian artist. Sinan works in various media such as painting, photography, ceramics, encaustic, collage and performance. Sinan explores cultural displacement, politics and personal identity, referencing perspectives on migration.

After graduating with a psychology degree from Sydney University, Sinan studied art and theatre arts. She worked in Australian film and television before joining “SPK” in 1982, a cult industrial electronic noise band in England. As a vocalist, she recorded and toured internationally, living in several different parts of the world including Australia, the UK and now the USA.
“My life in art has shown me that I didn’t need to fit in or conform. I could  be and do anything I wanted: vocalist, actor, 2D artist. I didn’t want to be restricted by one media or one style. It’s fine not to be in one category.”- SR

Revell’s Doppelg-ANGER series staged photographs which commented on various social-political inquiries. Revell portrayed each character. By portraying individuals as being capable of good or bad, Revell shows the thin line that connects us all.

Her Artist Talk is scheduled for Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 7:00 pm
Please RSVP to SCWCA for the Zoom link.

The application for the SCWCA Professional Development Award sponsored by our scholarship fund is on our SCWCA website. Deadline for applications is August 31,2021. For more information email Dellis Frank.

MEMBER NEWS
Passing of Bernice Coleman
Bee was a wonderful fiber artist, long-time member of SCWCA, Professor of Art at CSUN where she mentored many students and colleagues, a textile “maven”, and an overall wonderful kind friend, mother and grandmother.

We are sharing a quite poignant post from Facebook by one of her friends, Tina Staley (image credit left).
“The world lost a special person, a woman, a mother, a dear friend, an artist, a feminist, an educator, a world traveler, a fearless student, a curious mind, a generous spirit, an example of how to live life to the fullest-appreciating the smallest, loveliest, tastiest things. Your memory will be a blessing to me and so many, many others. Thank you Bee Colman for being all these things and more…”

SCWCA MEMBER GALLERY —
Carolyn Applegate
This month’s featured artist is Carolyn Applegate. Using a variety of materials such as stockings, fabric and wire she creates three-dimensional pieces. Stockings are then stuffed, creating shapes such as balls or elongated tubes, which are biomorphic forms. Her use of color as well as a tactile quality invites the viewer to take a closer look.

Carolyn’s art speaks about creation and a life force. They are a playful reminder
of one’s sense of touch, sight and taste.

I invite you to take a closer look at Carolyn Applegate’s art at Carolyn Applegate

The Membership Gallery is a free benefit for current SCWCA members. If you’d
like to create or update a page, please email Susan T. Kurland at

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES

Occupy the Moment, Intersect History with Impact

WCA National Exhibition
Bridgeport Art Center, Chicago, IL

DEADLINE: September 30, 2021
Juror: Dr. Maura Reilly
EntryThingy

In the last half century, the art historical canon has been uprooted and redefined. The canon was erected on categorized colonial narratives and invented racial rankings. The WCA has cast aside this “white male gaze” to define our own vision.

This National WCA 50th Anniversary exhibition is seeking artistic works that address this moment of 2022. Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly, considering the multiple paths of how we arrived here and what we envision moving forward. We encourage art that explores the ways that our identities and expressions intersect with such factors as environment, culture, time and location. Artwork can be in any approach and form, subjects may range from the historic precedents set by political activism, to personal transformation, social engagement and beyond.

SCWCA's  Position on Equality
SCWCA’s mission is to create community through art, education, and social activism. Hate and bigotry have no place in our organization. We condemn these racist, violent acts in the strongest possible terms and encourage our members to do so as well. We stand in solidarity with all those who suffer from fear, harassment, and violence.

Part of our mission as an organization is activism, so we stand with the Black Lives Matter and Stop AAPI Hate movements because we believe that all humans are connected.
