Increased Demand for Childcare Leads to Nanny Shortage
As many families may have seen in the news as of late or experienced firsthand, there is a current nanny shortage. A variety of factors related to the pandemic have led to a surge in the number of families seeking top-quality candidates and, consequently, a scarcity of available talent.

Demand for nannies has never been higher. As a result, the market is extremely competitive with excellent candidates commanding higher salaries and families moving through the trial and interview process with unprecedented speed.

Katie Montalbano, British American Household Staffing’s Director of Recruitment, shared that she has “never seen hourly and annual salary rates so high” during her entire career in recruitment. Experienced candidates are asking for – and receiving – higher salaries. Employers are not only offering increased wages, but attractive benefits packages as well, including insurance, extra paid time off, and other perks.  British American Household Staffing is here to support your family and aid in finding the right match during this busy time.
Tips for Improving Your Nanny Search During this Time
Do dedicate time and attention to your search.

As the market is moving quickly, you’ll need to make sure you can dedicate time to interviewing candidates and, if they’re a good fit, moving forward to the trial stage quickly. This will decrease the chances that you’ll find yourself frustrated when candidates you’re interested in are continuously hired for other positions. We also recommend that if you’re uncertain about a resume, take a few minutes to schedule a video chat anyway – often, a candidate presents much stronger in person than on paper. And the opposite is true too – if a candidate is perfect on paper but doesn’t feel right to you, we always recommend trusting your instincts.

Do be thoughtful about what you can comfortably add to your overall job package to make it more attractive.

If you find yourself competing in this difficult market, take some time to think about what you realistically can do to make the overall package more appealing. Can you increase the salary? Can you offer more paid vacation? Even small perks like offering dinner and a paid ride home on late nights can increase the chances a candidate may be interested in your job. Be sure not to commit to anything that you can’t sustain long-term.

Of course, do make sure that you’re being upfront and clear about the job description, and your needs and expectations – it’s never a good idea to make the job sound more appealing before hire as the placement likely won’t last if expectations and reality don't align. When you find a candidate you love, take the time to understand their priorities – what can you offer that will facilitate a mutually beneficial partnership? Sometimes a little flexibility can go a long way.

Do give yourself time.

Start your search early. Since the current pool of candidates is smaller, it’s best to give yourself time to wait for the right person. The agency aims for long-term placements and this is achieved through a great personality fit and a compensation package both the candidate and the family feel good about.  Remember every search is different; some families might find their perfect match in the first interview or two while others might need to interview several nannies to find their long-term fit.

Don’t compromise on quality.

While there is a shortage of nannies, your family shouldn’t have to compromise on the level of care your children are receiving. Think about what areas you can and cannot compromise on to open up your pool of candidates – for example, you may not be able to be flexible on vaccination status or a second language but, perhaps, there are areas in which you could remove some of the search constraints, such as special skills or a specific degree. The recruiters at British American Household Staffing can advise your family on what areas of the job description or requirements might be limiting your search.

What Nanny Is Best For Your Child(ren) and Lifestyle?

Understanding your family’s specific needs are necessary in order to recognize your perfect nanny. A few questions to consider are:

  • What are the ages of your children?
  • Would a nanny specialising in education and tutoring be ideal?
  • Does your family travel extensively?
  • Do the children need full-charge care?
  • Would a high-energy nanny that can keep up with busy schedules be best?
  • Or would your children thrive with a calm, quiet presence?
  • Do you employ other staff in your home and need a team player, or a nanny that works best autonomously and knows what to do with little direction?
