Dear Parents, Students and Gurukula Community,

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to Term 3. We are now officially in the second half of the school year. This Term, our school community is focusing on the value of 'saucam' or cleanliness. This is a broad sanskrit concept that includes both the external and internal cleanliness. An external cleanliness refers to our bodies, our clothing, our belongings, our environment. An internal cleanliness refers to our minds, our thoughts, our speech, our attitudes. We will be exploring and discussing all the facets of this important value throughout the term.

The start of this term was made very auspicious with the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Last week, the Gurukula students participated in the Ratha Yatra, an ancient ceremony of pulling the cart with the Deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Subhadra Devi. A very big thanks to our parents, Kisori and Nrsimhananda for assisting to organise the festival and bringing the cart for the Lord. Also, we need to recognise the students and teachers who prepared and made this festival so sweet. Parents, community members and our cooking elective students in Years 7 and 8 made various preparations for the Lord. The students took responsibility for making cards and decorations, offering their services as pujaris, musical instrument players, singers and protectors of the chariot. Special thanks also goes to our Year 1 and 2 students for reciting Lord Jagannath's glorification mantras Well done to everyone! It was a very heart warming, peaceful and joyful event, setting a very positive mood for this school term

Perspectives Gurukula Survey

Dear parents and students, we would like to thank everyone who took time to complete our school's Perspectives survey. This survey was developed by the Evidence Institute of the NSW Association of Independent Schools (NSW AIS) as an assisting tool to identify the strengths and areas for future growth and change. The survey covered the aspects of our school environment, teaching and learning, student wellbeing, leadership and community involvement. Using the survey data along with other evidence, we will be determining the priorities and goals that are targeted and reflect our stakeholders' needs. Following that, our school staff will work together with the consulting team of the Evidence Institute to develop and implement the school improvement plan.

Several parents mentioned they were hoping to provide more information to the school than what was available in the survey and a few parents expressed that they experienced technical difficulty with the online format. We would like to assure our parents community that survey tool is only one of the many evidential mechanisms. If you would like to provide us with further feedback and information, please do so by writing directly to admin@krishnaschool.nsw.edu.au or to ensure anonymity to Hare Krishna School, PO Box 546, Murwillumbah NSW 2484.

JAGANNATHA CLASSROOM
Pre K & Kindergarten

The Jagannatha class had a wonderful start to term 3. For Design and Technology, students collaboratively planned, built and tested a house structure from given materials. The hands-on team activity was enjoyed by all and happy to report that most structures withstood the blow of the big bad wolf (fan)! 4 pictures

The highlight of week 2 was the highly anticipated Ratha Yatra festival. During the day, after completing some academic work, students engaged in creating a cart from various 2D shapes. In the afternoon, all students participated in pulling the cart from the gate to the oval. We sang for the Lordships and tasted a selection of the prasadam kindly prepared by parents, community members and high school students .

Dear Parents, Welcome Term 3. The students of grades 1 & 2 have started their history lessons by bringing artefacts from home. They are learning about life from the past through those artefacts. We also started our Term 3 by learning a small sweet bhajan about Lord Jagannath, which was performed on the Rathayatra day at school. This was a positive way of starting off our term.

Premavati
KRISHNA BALARAMA CLASSROOM
Years 3-4

Year 3-4 have been writing Explanation Information Reports and adding diagrams to assist the explanation.  Featured is Bela and Rama’s explanation about how bio gas is created from cow manure.  For their assessment, the students will be learning about Earth Ships and writing explanations about how they work.

Last Thursday our school had a wonderful Rathayatra festival.  Year 3-4 made beautiful Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra posters by layering coloured paper shapes like a puzzle to create the forms of Their Lordships.  The students then added colourful ornaments using various mediums.

RADHA KRISHNA CLASSROOM
Years 5-6

Radha Krishna Class started this term by recognising and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  This collaborative art piece was created by the class and displayed as part of our NAIDOC week celebrations.

Our topic this term is Factors that Shape Place. This is a geography unit that looks at biomes around the world, how humans shape places and natural disasters.

In PDH, Kat will be visiting from The Family Centre to present Super ME!  Super ME!, Is an 8-week program that focuses on enhancing child safety, positive peer dynamics and family functioning. By working with the whole class and the class teachers the intention is to create a community of awareness and support and to ensure that no child ‘falls through the cracks’.

Themes include the use of power and violence; setting boundaries; managing emotions; grief and loss; and the right to be safe at home and school.

Modern Science: Chemistry
This week we had the opportunity to demonstrate the reaction between Potassium and water. The Potassium is so reactive that it burns while reacting with the water. The reaction has a beautiful velvet flame. The students were excited to observe the reaction.

Bhakti Sastri

In the purport of BG 5.15 Srila Prabhupada explains the relationship between Krsna and the conditioned souls. The students had an assignment to read the purport and share their realisation in a short passage, below are two examples of these assignments:

The Supreme Lord is described as Vibhu, full of unlimited power and knowledge, and the living entity is anu or atomic. Krishna does not create a specific situation for a living entity, the living entity desires it because he is influenced by ignorance. Krishna fulfils these desires. This is when the chain of action and reaction begins. The Lord is never responsible for these actions and reactions of the specific situation which was desired. Being bewildered the embodied soul identifies himself with the material body and engages himself in the temporary misery and happiness of life. The Lord can fulfil all desires by being neutral to everyone, but when one desires Krishna He takes exceptional care and encourages  it so one can attain Him and achieve eternal happiness.

(by Jahnavi Robson, grade 9).

I think what Prabhupada is talking about in this purport means that every living soul is originally unstained by the desires of material nature, but since we are humans living in the age of Kali Yuga we have become greedy, self centred and entirely engrossed in material nature, we desire things that are unneeded and not necessary to move back to godhead. When we commit greedy and selfish acts, Krishna allows us to do so, but is not responsible for the actions that occur, these actions result in the confusion of the embodied soul and we become obsessed with the duality of life, and this has pushed us away from our original love of Krishna. But through devotional service, this love can be re-attained.

(by Balagovinga, grade 9).

Personalised Learning Plans

Students take advantage of their personalised learning path time in different ways and it’s nice to see some starting to advance their way into senior high school studies. Rollie is using his PLP time to research year 11 modern history topics under Gopapatni’s guidance. The more syllabus outcomes he completes the less preliminary content he’ll have left to complete this subject in year 11. Well done Rollie.

Leonardo

Cooking Elective

The students were very excited to resume the cooking classes. We started the third term with a delicious Indian feast of paneer bhurji, naan bread, fried rice, kachoris and tamarind chutney.  For Ratha Yatra the students prepared 145 cinnamon rolls for the pleasure of our Lords Sri Jagannath, Sri Baladeva and Sri Subhadra and all the devotees.

Career Education

For our students the world of work will be different by the time they graduate. This is without considering the abrupt turns our society can sometimes take. It’s important to discuss with students how these changes can be seen as opportunities to grow and find creative ways to contribute to our community. Some global trends discussed in class include how our biodiversity is progressively endangered, an aging world population, the need to draw energy from less taxing means, etc.

Years 7 & 8 students looked at present and future jobs that would be needed to make those trends work positively for us and, apart from their sound reasoning and creativity, some students mentioned the need for spiritual workers to help us feel satisfied within. It’s a pleasure to hear these reflections coming from our youth.

Sastra Classes

In Sastra classes the students of 7-8 grade are practicing different dramas and discussing the spiritual morals to learn from the plays. They will perform dramas: “ The frogs in a well”, “Again become a mouse”, “The drowning man” and more. Grades 11-12 are exploring the meaning of self realization through different methods of self awareness.

Visual Arts
Years 7 and 8

Term three Visual Art will give the students the opportunity to experience a collaboration between Math and Art. This collaboration will involve students creating a design for a sculpture informed by their research into a variety of contemporary artists. After having researched a 20th century artist and beyond, students are asked to consider how they can develop their own forms. A 2D illustration from multiple perspectives will be developed and then, well we shall see. I look forward to seeing the works evolve and I am sure you will all enjoy it too.

Gopapatni
Stage 6 Art

Senior students will venture off into the realm of figurative art this term starting with research into Power in Art. Concepts embedded within the collective can guide ways in which visual artists portray or reflect the world. An introduction into 14th Century Italian Annunciation paintings by Fra Angelico (1440–60) and Botticelli (c.1490) will be followed by a look at the Aboriginal artist Ada Bird Petyyarre with his work Awelye (for the Mountain Devil Lizard) that will enable students to look at cultural influences with an emphasis on how meaning is created within a community thus informing their own works of its influences and goals, if goal there be.

Business Studies

Term Three is our last and the busiest term of the Business Studies course. This term, the students will be completing their studies of business finance and human resources. Along with the content study, students will be producing their last HSC assignment in which they will evaluate the financial performance of some of the biggest businesses in Australia and the world. More so, the students will also be sitting their HSC trials exams and finalising their own business plan assignment from the Year 11 level of the course.
