COVID'S IMPACT ON NJ: 1,034,233 CASES & 26,579 DEATHS

Yesterday, state officials reported COVID-19 has spread to 902,870 PCR-confirmed cases, and 131,363 probable cases. It has killed a confirmed 23,860 people. 2,719 people likely died from the virus, though it hasn't been confirmed.

The statewide transmission rate is 1.44, which is the same as yesterday (1.44). Unfortunately, this isn't a good sign. Anything above 1.0 means the outbreak is growing: every infected person is spreading it to at least one other person.

NJ HOUSE DELEGATION TARGETS NY — NJ TRANSIT RELIEF

New Jersey's 11-member delegation to the House of Representatives wrote to the Federal Transit Administration about federal funding linked to the pandemic. The bipartisan group urged the FTA to split the funds fairly among New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York, and warned that New York is trying to work around the current rules to get more funding than the state deserves. ICE DETAINEES AT BERGEN JAIL ALLEGE VARIOUS ABUSES

Three advocacy groups — Freedom for Immigrants, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Unlocal Inc. — have filed a suit on behalf of fifteen people who are now (or were previously) detained at Bergen County Jail. The lawsuit alleges ICE detainees faced sexual assault, medical neglect, and "deplorable" conditions at the jail, and it calls for a new investigation. (NJ Spotlight News)

MURPHY URGES RESIDENTS TO GET VACCINATED FOR COVID

As you know, the pandemic isn't over — but you may be surprised how quickly the outbreak across New Jersey has turned for the worse. COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths are rising, overwhelmingly among people who haven't been vaccinated yet. Gov. Phil Murphy's tone yesterday was serious.

"I beg you," he said. "Unless more of you, for whatever reason, have not been vaccinated step up and receive your doses, these risks will remain." (WHYY)

1/3 OF NJ TEACHERS PASS LICENSING EXAMS THE FIRST TIME

This article by Chalkbeat Newark bureau chief Catherine Carrera explores data that doesn't seem to have an easy answer, at least so far. Nationwide, nearly 1 in 2 — 45% — of teachers who take a licensing exam pass the test on their first try. In New Jersey, though, far fewer are successful: it's about 1 in 3, or 34%. Why is this happening? This one is really worth reading. (Chalkbeat Newark)
