Upfest at Riverside

Botanical artist Hannah McVicar has teamed up with us as part of Upfest’s #75walls project, in which 75 new murals are being painted in south Bristol this summer. Hannah has been spending hours on site at Riverside (even in the blazing heat) intricately painting a panel for us which will soon act as a brand new, absolutely gorgeous, information board for our customers. We’ll be using the board to keep you updated on what’s new in stock, what’s coming soon and to tell you about some of our staff’s top ‘plant picks’!

If you haven’t caught a glimpse of the board yet, come and have a look next time you visit us. Hannah will be continuing to add to it over the coming days. We just love it and we hope you will too!

Delightful dahlias

We’ve been celebrating dahlia season here at Riverside, and their colourful blooms are currently opening up all over the garden centre. These plants really pack a punch, and with regular deadheading they will generally keep on flowering until the frosts. They come in an amazing range of flower forms, including singles, cactus, semi-cactus, pompom and waterlily. Bees and butterflies love them, particularly the more open flower types which give easy access to pollen and nectar. Unfortunately, slugs and snails are also partial to dahlias so it can be worth giving them some protection!

Dahlias can be left in the ground all year round in warm and sheltered beds (or in a pot which can be moved to a sheltered spot). Or they can be lifted in winter and the tubers stored in a frost-free place until spring. To give dahlias a head start early in the year you can plant the tubers up in pots (again in a frost-free location) and then plant them out in summer. At Riverside we start selling the tubers in our shop after Christmas, so keep an eye out then if you’d like to try growing them yourself next year.

Meyer lemons

One of our favourite citrus trees, the Meyer lemon, is now in stock. This variety (which is actually a cross between a citron and a mandarin/pomelo hybrid, if you want to get technical!) is easily the hardiest lemon available to buy, as it can take a few degrees of frost. It produces its beautifully fragrant blossoms throughout the year and these develop into thin-skinned fruit with a taste sweeter than other lemons.

You can grow Meyer lemons in a patio pot, conservatory or in a very sheltered border. We stock a range of products in our shop, including citrus compost and citrus feeds, to help you take the best care of your plant.

Happy to help.

If you have any questions at all then please feel free to contact us, we'd love to hear from you!
