CHUMASH

Parshas Eikev - Revi'i with Rashi

Moshe is farbrenging with the Yidden about more things that happened in the Midbar, so they will be ready to go into Eretz Yisroel:

“Hashem told me to make a new set of Luchos, since the first ones were broken. He also told me to make an Aron to hold it in.” (This was a different Aron than the one in the Mishkan — the Yidden didn’t build the Mishkan until later.)

“I made the Luchos like Hashem told me, and went up onto Har Sinai again for another 40 days.”

Moshe now reminds the Yidden about something else that they did — when Aharon passed away, and some of Hashem’s clouds went away, they were scared to fight with the Goyim. They turned around and tried to run back to Mitzrayim, but the Leviim chased after them and fought with them until they agreed to come back!

(Even though this happened 39 years after the Luchos, toward the end of their stay in the Midbar, Moshe tells the Yidden about this now.

Why?

To tell us that when a Tzadik passes away, it’s as sad as when the Luchos were broken, and to teach us that when the Yidden tried to run back to Mitzrayim, it was as sad for Moshe as the Cheit HaEigel.)

“After the Cheit HaEigel, Hashem said that only Shevet Levi should be the kohanim, and not the firstborn of all the Yidden. (That’s why Shevet Levi doesn’t get a part of Eretz Yisroel — they are working for Hashem and don’t have time to work in their fields. Hashem pays them with the special presents we give to the kohanim.)

“And even though you did such a big aveira, Hashem still told me to lead you towards Eretz Yisroel!”

TEHILLIM

90 - 96

Today’s Tehillim is kapitelach Tzadik to Tzadik-Vov.

The first kapitel in today’s Tehillim was written by Moshe Rabbeinu. Dovid Hamelech later put it in Tehillim. It starts with the words “Tefillah LeMoshe, Ish HaElokim.” “This is a Tefillah by Moshe Rabbeinu, a person of Hashem.”

Why is Moshe Rabbeinu called “a person of Hashem”?

Hashem is everything and everything is Hashem — but we can’t see that! Hashem made the world because Hashem wants Yidden to act according to Torah and mitzvos and make a Dira Betachtonim.

But if we can’t see Hashem, how do we know how to act? That’s why Hashem gives Yidden a Moshe Rabbeinu, who is “a person of Hashem.” A Moshe Rabbeinu has two parts — one part of him that is “of Hashem” — very close to Hashem so he knows what Hashem wants, but he is also “a person” — so he can teach us what we need to do!

There is always a Nasi, like Moshe Rabbeinu, who helps the Yidden do what Hashem wants at that time. Now, of course, the Rebbe is our Moshe Rabbeinu!

The Rebbe told us that we are about to see the Geulah, and we need to learn and teach about it! We need to spread Yiddishkeit and Chassidus and ask Hashem to bring Moshiach NOW!

Here is another letter from the Alter Rebbe, explaining to Chassidim how special it is to give Tzedakah. (The Alter Rebbe especially wanted Chassidim to send money to the Chassidim in Eretz Yisroel, who had no way to get money. This is actually one of the reasons why the Alter Rebbe was arrested before the Chag HaGeulah of Yud-Tes Kislev!)

There is a posuk (in Mishlei) that teaches us that the reward for giving Tzedakah is that a Yid gets Emes (truth). What does it mean “to get Emes,” and why do we get it for giving Tzedakah?

To understand this, first let’s learn something about our neshamos: When the neshama is born in a body, it can only see things that a Gashmius body can let it see. It can’t see Hashem and that Hashem is one — even though it is true! (Like we learned before in Tanya, “Hashem is one” means that even though there are so many things in the world, and even though Hashem made a whole world from nothing, it didn’t change Hashem!)

It is a big rachmonus on the poor Neshama when it is in a Gashmius body and can’t see the Emes.

IY”H tomorrow we will see what this has to do with getting emes as a reward for giving tzedakah.

Yud-Tes Menachem Av

Today we learn the seder of someone who puts on four pairs of Tefillin.

Why would someone have FOUR pairs of Tefillin?

Four different Chachomim explained the halacha of which order to put the parshios (the pieces of parchment) in the compartments inside the Tefillin. Each gave a different order, and they each bring a different kind of Ruchnius koach to the person who wears them.

The halacha in Shulchan Aruch is according to Rashi, but some people have a minhag to wear the other kinds too. Our minhag is to wear two pairs of Tefillin — Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam. Still, some special people have a minhag to wear ALL FOUR kinds of Tefillin!

We learn today what a person should daven or learn when wearing each pair of tefillin.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #45 - Mitzvas Asei #155

Today’s mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #155) is to make Shabbos holy, by saying special things when Shabbos comes in and when Shabbos goes out. We speak about how great and special Shabbos is, and how it is different than the days before and after it.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Yisro (one of the Aseres Hadibros): זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ

The posuk means, “Remember Shabbos to keep it holy.”

Torah Shebaal Peh explains what this mitzvah is. The Mechilta, the Midrash of halacha, explains that this means to make a bracha. In Gemara, the Chachomim tell us to make this bracha over a cup of wine. The Gemara says we should make a bracha when Shabbos ends as well, to separate it from the rest of the days.

That’s why we keep this mitzvah by making Kiddush and Havdalah!

The halachos of how to keep this mitzvah are discussed in the end of Gemara Pesachim, and in parts of Mesechta Brachos and Mesechta Shabbos.

The Rambam organizes these halachos in Perek Chof-Tes of Hilchos Shabbos, part of the Rambam tomorrow.

Hilchos Shabbos

In today’s Rambam, we learn about other things we don’t do on Shabbos, even if they aren’t similar to a melacha and won’t lead to a melacha. These things we don’t do because they aren’t Shabbosdik things to do, even though they have nothing to do with a melacha. The Chachomim learned from a posuk (“Mimtzo Cheftzecha VeDaber Davar”) that we shouldn’t act like we do during the week.

We also start learning about muktza — things that aren’t meant to be used on Shabbos.

Perek Chof-Daled: We learn not to speak about business like you do during the week. We are allowed to talk about money for the sake of a mitzvah though, like to raise money for tzedakah.

Perek Chof-Hey: Another way that Shabbos is different than the rest of the days of the week is that we don’t move things that are muktza, which means separated from use. Some things are muktza because they are not allowed to be used on Shabbos, and other things are muktza because they are very expensive and you are always careful about touching them. There are also things that are muktza because they are disgusting, and you are always careful not to touch them!

Perek Chof-Vov: The Rambam gives examples of keilim and what kind of muktza they are. We learn when it is asur to move them, and when we are allowed to use them for something which is allowed on Shabbos.

Hilchos Terumos - Perek Tes

Someone who lives in the house of a kohen IS al- lowed to eat terumah. For example, a kohen’s wife or his slave (not just someone working for him) are allowed to eat terumah, even if they aren’t kohanim themselves! (In fact, we can even feed terumah to the animals that belong to a kohen!) But if they move out or the kohen passes away, they are not allowed to eat terumah anymore.

Yidden and the Moon - Part 2

This past Shabbos was the Yom Tov of Chamisha-Asar B’Av.

We learned that the lesson the Chachomim tell us to take from this day is to add in learning Torah. But, as we asked before, how does this fit with the full moon after Tisha B’Av? The MOON only gets smaller afterwards, but WE are supposed to keep adding in our Torah learning as the nights get longer and longer!

We will understand the answer by looking at how the moon really works:

When we look at the moon at different days of the month, it can look to us that it is bigger or smaller. Sometimes it is only a thin line, but in the middle of the month, it is full and round!

Still, the moon doesn’t ACTUALLY get smaller after the middle of the month! The moon LOOKS smaller because we can only see the part of it shining on the world.

Really, the moon is always the same size, and is always shining the same amount! If we flew up to space, we could go around to the other side of the moon and see how it is full and shining!

A Yid, like the moon, also has a part of himself that is shining where other people can’t see. That is the part of us that connects to Hashem through davening and learning. When we do mitzvos and help and teach others, that is like the way we can see the moon, shining in the world. But our personal davening and learning and connecting to Hashem is the other kind of shining, that can’t be seen by other people in the world.

This is the lesson of Chamisha-Asar B’Av:

We need to be like the moon in BOTH ways! There are times when we need to make sure we are shining in the world, through helping other Yidden and making a Kiddush Hashem in the world, and there are times when we need to work on shining in ways that other people can’t see.

Starting from Chamisha-Asar B’Av, we make sure that we are adding in our learning Torah, together with davening so we will feel a bittul and strong connection to Hashem. This personal connection becomes more each day, just like the moon in the second half of the month, which shines more and more on the side that we can’t see!

This continues throughout the month, getting us ready for the new Avodah of the month of Elul which is coming very soon!

TEFILLAH

Ve'arva

In Korbanos in the morning, we say the pesukim that talk about the Korban Tomid and the Ketores, and the halachos about how the Ketores is made. When we do this, Hashem counts it as if we are actually bringing the Korban Tomid and the Ketores!

After finishing (and saying the pesukim that Kabbalah teaches we should say after the Ketores), we say a posuk from Malachi: “Ve’arva LaHashem Minchas Yehuda Viyerushalayim, Kimei Olam Ucheshanim Kadmoniyos.” “The korbanos of the Yidden should be sweet to Hashem, like days of old and previous times.”

This posuk is part of a Nevuah about the Geulah! The Navi says that Hashem will give us the Beis Hamikdash and accept our korbanos with all of the nisim we had during the first Beis Hamikdash.

We are asking Hashem that not only should it be counted as we are bringing the Tomid and the Ketores, but that we should actually be able to bring them for Hashem in the Beis Hamikdash Hashlishi!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Buying Seforim

There is a mitzvah in the Torah that every person should write a Sefer Torah. Nowadays, we fulfill this mitzvah by buying a letter in the Sefer Torah and by buying seforim.

Did you know that there are halachos about which seforim to buy first?

The most important seforim to buy are the ones you need for learning. So before having a nice set of seforim to put on your shelf, you should first make sure you have the ones that you will need for learning.

Of course we need a Chitas and a Rambam, and basic seforim like a Tanach. But after that, which seforim of learning should we get?

The Alter Rebbe tells us in Hilchos Talmud Torah that the first parts of Torah to learn are the ones that teach us how to behave as a Yid, both halacha seforim that teach us what to do and seforim of Mussar and Chassidus which give us the right hashkafa and Yiras Shomayim.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

There Will Be No More War

Hashem gives the same message to many of the neviim, but each Navi tells it in his own way! That’s why so many nevuos say the same things about the Geulah.

Here is how the Navi Hoshea tells us about the time of the Geulah, when there will be no danger and no war:

וְכָרַתִּי לָהֶם בְּרִית בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא עִם חַיַּת הַשָּׂדֶה וְעִם עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וְרֶמֶשׂ הָאֲדָמָה וְקֶשֶׁת וְחֶרֶב וּמִלְחָמָה אֶשְׁבּוֹר מִן הָאָרֶץ וְהִשְׁכַּבְתִּים לָבֶטַח

Vechorati Lahem Bris Bayom Hahu — In that time, it will be as if there is a promise to have peace

Im Chayas Hasadeh — With the wild animals

Ve’im Of Hashomayim — And with the birds in the sky

Veremes Ho’adamah — And the bugs of the earth.

Vekeshes Vecherev Umilchama Eshbor Min Ha’aretz — The bow, the sword, and war I will break off from the world

Vehishkavtim Lavetach — And I will let the Yidden rest safely.
