SUMMER UPDATES

August 4th, 2021

It has been a busy (and wet!) summer at Green City Growers! Our sites are growing well and we are now planting, weeding, and harvesting all at once. So far, we have harvested over 9,300 pounds of produce this season, which will increase significantly by the fall. If you are interested in continuing to grow, learn, creating engagement opportunities or installing a new project this coming fall, let's start planning now!

We have been having a lot of fun this summer at the various camps and programs that we are a part of. Summertime brings all kinds of exciting gardening activities. Read about some our education highlights below!

FARMERS IN TRAINING

Codman Academy and Codman Square Health Center's Codman Community Garden in Dorchester has been thriving this summer thanks to the Codman student farmers! Three of last summers' student interns tended the garden through this past fall, winter, and spring with the help of GCG Farmer Dani. As a result of their work in this project they earned an EPA President's Environmental Youth Award (PEYA)! They handed off the garden to the Codman summer interns and youth empowerment program participants who launched the first ever Codman Youth Farmer's Market this summer!

EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Congratulations to all of the schools that have received the 26th Annual Secretary’s Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education! We love being a part of Boston Public Schools K-12 “Growing Resilience, Gardens and Grounds Program” and seeing the impact it has on the students. It is great to see all of the success from environmental science programs around the state. Read more about the awards HERE.

Pickled Carrots! Green City Growers shows how to make carrot pickles that can be stored in the fridge.
Enjoy vegetables fresh from the garden this fall! There is still time to plant cool-tolerant fall crops, such as kale, beets, arugula, and other greens. Contact us if you'd like to schedule a planting visit.
