New changes for the VRT and City Go websites

You may notice some changes to ValleyRegionalTransit.org and CityGoBoise.com. To better serve riders, both sites have upgraded their trip planners to Moovit, an app that can help you plan your trip and provide information on the number of people at station stops and buses. Moovit is part of Umo; the platform Valley Regional Transit and City Go will transition to this fall to integrate fares for buses, vanpools, and parking. Locally, the app will be called City Go Pay. The Moovit app is available in the app stores for your phone.

The other major change taking place on the VRT site is the implementation of a new intelligent transit system. VRT is partnering with ETA to install new equipment to better track the location of buses through ETA’s SPOT app. Installation started on July 28 and should be completed by August 16. Currently, riders use the RouteShout app to track bus locations. During the transition, riders will need to download the SPOT app and keep RouteShout on their phones to track bus locations. As new equipment is installed on buses, they will show up on the SPOT app and drop off RouteShout. The web-based bus tracker may not be showing current information during the transition.

ACHD will no longer use blue dye in salt

The Ada County Highway District maintains thousands of roadway miles during winter operations. Years ago, the highway district started using blue dye in the salt it drops on roads to help the public and their crews identify the roads that have been treated for winter driving. As it turns out, the product used to tint the salt can harm waterways. So ACHD is discontinuing its use.

Boise may not be as bike-friendly as we thought

People for Bikes just released its 2021 City Ratings scores, and Boise didn’t fare so well. The City Ratings scores are a combination of a city’s Network Score and its Community Score. The Network Score, which is worth 80% of the overall City Ratings score, measures the quality of a city’s bicycle network. The Community Score, which is worth 20% of the City Ratings score, measures how people feel about biking in their city. Boise ranks 512 out of 767 U.S. cities rated, with an overall score of just 23, far, far below the number one city, Provincetown, MA at 81.

Bike Share isn’t just for cities anymore

In the U.S., bike share systems are predominantly found in cities, a trademark of places keen on cutting down their carbon footprint, improving mobility options, and relieving congestion. As with many things—like accessible healthcare facilities and grocery stores—rural America has been left behind. Rural Americans, who make up 15% of the population, arguably have the most to benefit. Not only do they live further from essential services, with limited transportation options for those without a vehicle, they also suffer from numerous health disparities compared to their urban counterparts. In Kansas, two rural bike share systems are making a major impact on their communities.
