Long-Term Development Stages in Sport and Physical Activity

To help all Canadians enjoy and reach their potential in sport and physical activity, we need to apply a rational, progressive Long-Term Development framework. Children, youth, and adults need to do the right things at the right time to develop in their sport or activity – whether they want to be hockey players, dancers, figure skaters, or gymnasts. Long-Term Development describes what athletes need to be doing at specific ages and stages.

Sport, physical activity, and active recreation for all

Low levels of physical activity are associated with increased risk of anxiety and depression, non-communicable diseases like heart disease or diabetes, and chronic disease risk factors like obesity. Our Recommendation #7: That government and key decision makers recognize and further invest in sport and active recreation which would provide a positive return to the health and wellness of the participant and the community through decreased health care costs.
