Web monetization could fill a giant hole in the content distribution market.
There are essentially two ways to sell content on the web today - ad based or premium. If content is ad based it is free for the user, and the creator is paid by the platform that mines the user data and serves the ad. If content is premium, it is sold for $1 or more and can be purchased a la carte, by subscription, pay-per-view, etc. This means there is huge unserved market of content that is worth more than the tiny amount paid for an ad-based view and less than the $1 minimum of premium content.
And that is where Web Monetization comes in.
