FROM CRISIS TO CHRIST-CENTERED HOPE AND RESTORATION

VISION: To meet the basic needs of the hungry, homeless and unemployed while teaching life skills that lead them to be community restorers and part of a Christ-centered church. It is a privilege and honor, not a sacrifice, to serve the low income/no income persons in a Christ-like way.

 Compassion and Cars

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to share on the topic of Compassion to a Church Planters Class at Bethlehem College and Seminary.  Here are some of the topics that I shared:

  1.  A calling to the city and to those in need
  2.  God is a merciful God who has bestowed on us, Unconditional Love.
  3.  A Merciful and Compassionate frame of Mind: Key Bible Themes and Verses
  4.  Good Samaritan: A Call to be Compassionate
  5.  Compassion Defined: Co-Suffering (Latin Etymology)
  6.  Godly Compassion
  7.  Understanding Poverty
  8.  How to work with Neighbors in Need

The topic was well received by the Church Planters and it took the entire hour.  It was time well spent.  Church leaders need to teach Biblical Compassion.  The compassionate outpouring of the Saints of God displays vividly to the world the God who suffered and showed the Saints compassion.

Recently Pastor Paul from a Church in Chatfield, MN wanted to bring a youth group up to experience the city.  Like the Church Planters class, I felt compelled to accept the invitation because Pastors and kids in rural Minnesota need the opportunity to learn and do Biblical Compassion.

The two young men (in picture) from the Church Group were cheerfully picking up litter on Lake Street where the Riots had taken place.  In addition, we shared resources and prayer at a homeless encampment.  They wanted to make a difference in the city and they did.

A welcome but eerie sight on Lake Street was the return of the National Guard and their big vehicles the week of the court hearings for Derek Chauvin.  I am happy for the proactive step of our Governor, Mayor, the Chief of Police and the service of the National Guard. Their presence was impactful.

A neighbor’s parked-car was inoperable after the impact of a collision.  Many neighbors in need of transportation like this one come to Jericho Road for assistance for car repair, gas for their cars, or bus fare.  It is very gratifying to help these folks literally “get on their feet” as they start/keep their new or old jobs.

Our Jericho Road Van was recently taken off its feet (wheels) after the Catalytic Converter was stolen.  The sound was similar to a Harley Davidson Motorcycle x 20.  An insurance claims specialist with our insurer, Church Mutual, said that during the Pandemic the number of claims for stolen Catalytic Converters was equal to the claims for all other auto claims.  Jericho Road had a $1,000 deductible but it still ended up costing us over $1,200.  Ouch!  But we need the van for food and client transportation so we got it fixed right away.

A special thanks to everyone who has supported Jericho Road for the Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless Match during July!  It is not too late - but checks or online giving need to have a July date to be counted toward the match.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus - piano instrumental hymn with lyrics - YouTube

In Port Hope, Ontario there is a monument that has been set up in honor of a Mr. Joseph Scriven.  He was born in Ireland about 1820.  According to information on the internet and in several books on Christian hymnody, in 1843, the day before their scheduled marriage, his fiancée accidentally drowned.  Understandably he was profoundly grieved and deeply impacted.

In 1845 Scriven moved to Canada.  As the years passed, he “fell in love” again, and plans for marriage were well along when this second finance became ill with pneumonia, and died.  Scriven devoted the rest of his life to tutoring, preaching, and helping others.  All of this is to point out that Scriven was a man well acquainted with grief, emotional pain, trials in life, discouragement and sorrow.

In 1855, he got word from Ireland that his mother was extremely ill.  In response, he wrote a poem, intended to bring comfort to her. He entitled the poem, “Pray Without Ceasing”.  A visiting neighbor happened to see the poem on a piece of paper laying around in Scriven’s room and asked who wrote it.  Allegedly, Scriven replied, “The Lord and I did it together”.

We do not know what impact the poem may have had on his mother when she received her copy.  However, we do know that as time went on, the poem was set to music by Charles Converse, and re-named
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”.  It carries a powerful message of comfort and spiritual strength. Whether you, as a support partner of Jericho Road Ministries (JRM), are carrying a burden or a heavy care, or you are a “customer/client” coming to JRM for crisis aid, the message fits well and ministers powerfully, if we let it.  This is why staff and volunteers so often pray with those who come to JRM for assistance.  THANK YOU for your role in this.

Verse 1
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry,
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit;
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Verse 2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Verse 3
Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
You will find a solace there.
