COVID-19 Guidance and Information: Update 19th July 2021
As of 19th July 2021 – Scotland is at Level 0; and an update to the Scottish Government CLD Guidance was made, alongside the publication of an updated “Guiding Framework to support the delivery of youth work services” . We encourage member groups to be familiar with both guidance documents.  The CLD Guidance is particularly specific about the role of organisations as employers and in supporting the health and safety of volunteers / the CLD work place.

The Youth Work Guidance and the Frequently Ask Question section on the YouthLink Scotland website have been updated to reflect these changes.

As of 19 July when all of Scotland moves to Level 0, the following physical distancing measures apply:
  • no physical distancing required in outdoor settings
  • physical distancing of one metre in indoor settings
Providers of Youth Work services, staff and volunteers must take all reasonable measures:
  • to ensure a distance of one metre is maintained between any persons in indoor settings (except between members of the same household or a carer and the person assisted by the carer)
  • to ensure that they only admit people to in indoor settings in sufficiently small numbers to make it possible to maintain that distance
  • to ensure that a distance of one metre is maintained between any person waiting to enter the premises (except between members of the same household or a carer and the person assisted by the carer)
Youth Work providers must take a responsible attitude to these vital health protection rules and should look critically at their operations to ensure they take all reasonable measures so that workers and anyone else on the premises maintain a one metre distance from each other.

Please note there is NO CHANGE to the guidance related Face Coverings.

For any specific questions regarding the guidance please contact Ayliffe at YouthBorders or visit the YouthLink Scotland FAQ.

What is youth work’s role in the school age childcare landscape?
Tuesday 7th September 2021, 10am - 12pm
YouthLink Scotland and Lothian Association of Youth Clubs (LAYC) are hosting a national conversation to discuss this question on 7 September 2021 from 10am to 12pm.

In March 2021, Scottish Government published their Progress Report on School Age Childcare, acknowledging that school age childcare includes a broad range of services to support families around the school day and during holidays. Youth work forms an important part of the school age childcare landscape in Scotland. This can include providing access to activities, childcare, food and wider family support.

This event is aimed at youth work practitioners who deliver or manage after school clubs, breakfast provision, or holiday provision for children and young people up to the age of 14. Online booking.

BBC Children In Need - Main and Small Grants Programme
The Main Grants programme is now open and the Small Grants programme will open on the 16th of August
  • Main Grants (over £10,000 per year for up to 3 years). Deadline for applications 11.30am, August 23rd, 2021

Please visit their website for more information and to check for updates on future grant rounds and other funding streams when they are finalised.

Organisations wishing to apply should make sure they meet their minimum standards for grantmaking, and read the guidance carefully before applying.

A couple of things to note:

  • Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have temporarily broadened the types of applications they accept. Applications are not limited to one specific project and a request can be made for organisational running costs. They are committed to supporting voluntary groups with these types of grants.
  • They want to fund organisations who can tell them why they are best placed to deliver their work, so applicants must be able to tell them about:
    • Their well-established links with young people
    • The skills and expertise they have for the work they are requesting funding for
    • Their track record delivering the work they are requesting funding for. This is especially important for applicants for their Main Grants Programme
    • How they work alongside other organisations in their local community

If you or any of the organisations you support have any questions about submitting an application, please contact them and they will be happy to help.

UK Government Community Ownership Fund launched
The UK Government has launched a new £150 million Community Ownership Fund. This will provide funding over four years to support community groups to take ownership of assets and amenities at risk of being lost. From the summer onwards, voluntary and community groups can bid for up to £250,000 (up to £1M for sport projects) at 50% match funding to help them purchase or take over important assets and run them for the benefit of the local community.

The intention is to help ensure key assets within a community are not lost.   The UK Government has not published a definite list of eligible assets as they want to hear what matters to communities but the fund could support community ownership proposals including:
  • sporting and leisure facilities
  • cinemas and theatres
  • music venues
  • museums
  • galleries
  • parks
  • pubs
  • post office buildings
  • shops
Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate the value of the asset to local people and the sustainably of the project as well as the risk of losing the amenity without community intervention.
The Fund will run until 2024/25 and there will be at least 8 bidding rounds in total. Key dates are as follows:
  • 13 August 2021 – deadline for submitting applications to the first bidding round
  • December 2021 – round 2 will open
  • May 2022 – round 3 will open
For more details, please see the Community Ownership Fund prospectus.

Tesco Community Fund
Tesco is keen to support local projects that address issues around food insecurity and I wonder if you or your colleagues in the regional areas would be able to let local  groups  know about this opportunity and encourage them to apply. Ideally it would be good if they can apply by the end of July/beginning of August if they want to be considered for this round of in store voting. There are a lot of stores across Scotland that have not had any applications for the fund.

The quarterly customer in store voting rounds for each store area will aim to have one each of the following types of project

•          1 x Children & Families

•          1 x Food insecurity

•          1 x Tesco local store nomination

Customers will be able to choose from 3 shortlisted projects. The project selected 1st will get £1500; 2nd £1000 and 3rd £500. If groups have received Tesco funding previously, they will need to ensure that they have submitted a completion report for your project before applying.
