Nella Mae's Farm

Fresh, naturally-grown produce from our family farm in Cove, Oregon

Weekly Update

Hello friends,

Thanks for all the feedback and support from everyone who read my latest blog post. If you didn't see it last week, here it is: Water, Heat & Smoke: On the Front Lines of Climate Change.

I am really appreciative of all the offers of help. We are OK water-wise at our farm, but our neighbors are not. One is hauling water from our place for his cattle; another spent the last week preparing to buy and store water from the city of Cove because their creek water is done and their spring water is trickling.

This story is playing out all over the valley where fields are going unirrigated and left to fallow. The Grande Ronde River just hit 80 degrees, killing off returning salmon. Climate-change driven water crises are playing out across the state in Klamath Falls and across the west.

I know this is depressing and it is easier to avoid. I just encourage everyone to think about folks on the front line of this climate crisis when you get the urge to turn away--farm workers, fire fighters, farmers, ranchers, and those dependent on the land; wildlife & fish; the next generation.

I recently heard a great quote on one of my favorite podcasts, How to Save a Planet. One of the hosts said, "whatever your superpower is, we need you to employ it in the fight against climate change."

The podcast is great because it is all about climate change solutions being employed by people like us right now. Every episode comes with action items you can do.

I really appreciate everyone who told me they called their members of Congress last week for the first time. Keep it up! Here's how to call your members of Congress and demand climate change legislation now.

Time to order basil for pesto!
If you want to stock your freezer with pesto this year, it is time to order your big bags o' basil. Please call, text or email me your order. Basil is $10/lb or 3 lbs for $27. I recommend 2-3 lbs for your annual supply of pesto. Check out this recipe or give me a call and we can chat. (Tip: all you really need is olive oil and basil to make pesto...)

Please order for pick up at the farmstand or Saturday farmers market. 541-910-4098 or farmer@nellamaesfarm.com.

Tomato & chile update

We picked our first handful of tomatoes this week, so they will come on slowly next week and I expect lots by the second week of August. I know folks are eager for them, but they aren't actually late! They are right on time.

The peppers are and chiles are looking good and I expect about the same timing.
