A Triumphant
Return to Stage
|
“The hippest big band in the universe -
robust, earthy, sanctified.”
|
JOIN IN A NIGHT OF MYSTIC UNITY // Through the decades Mingus Big Band has become a local New York City institution, playing weekly to electrified audiences and sold out houses. With residencies at Fez under Time Cafe, Iridium, and most recently a nearly 12 year run at the world-class Jazz Standard, only God and a world health crisis could slow these wild and cunning celebrations of the life and legacy of Great American Composer, Charles Mingus.
In a much anticipated and triumphant return to the New York City stage, finally again we can swim in the rhythmic vibrations as the party reunites and is more charged up than ever.
We are thrilled to announce Mingus Big Band at DROM’s Summer Jazz Series on Thursday, July 29th!

NEW LEGACY RELEASE
THE COMPLETE CONCERT // In 1974, Atlantic Records released Mingus At Carnegie Hall with just two encore songs featuring guest artists Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles McPherson, and John Handy. Later discovered among the Warner Vaults were several analog reels containing 74 minutes of previously unreleased audio of the Charles Mingus Group featuring Don Pullen, Jon Faddis, George Adams, Hamiet Bluiett and Dannie Richmond at Carnegie Hall on January 19, 1974.
After nearly 50 years, we have the special opportunity to share with you this time capsule: hear the complete concert as it was originally played, by this ground-breaking group of musicians.
“…in many ways it’s much more gripping. This is vintage late-era Mingus – music that’s by turns joyous, ecstatic, furious, and just occasionally tender, as the quintet ricochets between gospel, blues and free jazz. It’s also very well recorded."

In Memory of
Howard Johnson
1941 - 2021
First sitting in with Charles Mingus at the Five Spot, Howard became a close family friend. Heard on many of Mingus’ large ensemble recordings from the 60’s and 70’s, more recently he has been a special guest at Mingus Festival and with Mingus Big Band.
He is loved and missed.
