5 LOW-CALORIE SNACK IDEAS

By Sportsplex Personal Trainer, Nick Meyer

Even though the summer season is flying by, it's never too late to make food choices to take you one step closer to your health goals. Here are 5 low-calorie alternatives to popular snacks that can make a huge difference in helping you achieve those goals!

1. "Smart Pop" Popcorn

What does better with a summer movie night than popcorn? The difference between a low-calorie popcorn (pictured) and the typical butter-smothered large bag can be hundreds of calories. Swap them out and you can still enjoy your movies with a healthier option of your go-to snack.

2. Protein Bars

Who doesn't love chocolate bars? Or cookies. Or Cake. Protein bars come in all of these flavors, are lower in calories, and are more satiating!  Pictured is my favorite brand, Quest, but by all means, try out different types and find what one is best for you! Do your research, some protein bars can be calorific- a good rule of thumb is 10 grams of protein to 100 calories.

3. Protein Chips

Love chips and dip? Try these lower calorie, higher protein options instead of your regular Ruffles of Lays. Quest has a large variety, but you can always get adventurous and make your own with low-calorie tortillas and seasonings. These chips are more filling and taste just as good without the calorie density of your typical potato chip.

4. Calorie-Wise Salad Dressing

If you're anything like me and love a good salad, you know that nothing completes a salad like a good quality dressing. Unfortunately, dressings can be high-calorie, undoing a lot of the good of the salad. I highly recommend Kraft's "Calorie-Wise" line of dressings, which can have as little as 5 calories per tablespoon! Of course, if you have a preferred low-calorie brand, that works just as well.

5. Diet Soda

If you love pop- this is the hack for you! Simply going from one 2L of Pepsi to a 2L of Diet Pepsi can drop 900 calories from your calorie total. I also find diet soda's curb cravings and help you feel more satiated due to its carbonation and sweetness. But you are not limited to Diet Pepsi! Diet Coke, Bubly, and AHA are all popular, low or no-calorie options!

If you want more nutrition or fitness advice, feel free to stop by the Sportsplex anytime (I basically live here) or shoot me an email at mavstrongfitness@gmail.com.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY
GORDON EARLE, MP

Nova Scotians are heading to the polls later this month, so keeping with that theme, this is Gordon Earle. Mr. Earle was the first Black member of Parliament elected from Nova Scotia and represented Halifax West in the House of Commons from 1997 - 2000.

While serving his community, Mr. Earle was active in several committees in parliament, including National Defense and Veterans Affairs, Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, Citizenship and Immigration, and a Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

While he is no longer an elected official, Mr. Earle still fights for equality in his community. He was active in pushing the government for an apology for the racist treatment of Canada's only Black military unit, the No. 2 Construction Battalion, formed in Pictou, N.S. in the First World War. In March of 2021, over a century later, the government finally agreed to the apology.

In 2013, Mr. Earle withdrew his political membership while speaking out against the government's handling of an abuse case within a former orphanage for Black children.

Gordon Earle still resides in Nova Scotia.
