The Homeschool Explosion: Why Parents Are Fed Up with Public School

Homeschooling rates have more than doubled, Black families at record high
Orange, California – In the wake of COVID, there is a tidal wave of change in how children are being educated. According to one report, teachers unions and activists held rallies in 22 cities to support critical race theory — and the organizers have unabashedly made it clear the goal is to recruit students to far-left causes.

As schools closed during the pandemic, many parents were forced to teach their children from home. Surprisingly, many found it more beneficial to their children than public school. Now, the U.S. Census Bureau is reporting households homeschooling their children rose by 11% by September 2020, more than doubling from the 5.4% just six months earlier. A stunning development is that Black households jumped from 3.3% to a whopping 16.1% rate.

According to author Jenn Tarbell, the majority of parents choosing to homeschool are weary and wary of efforts to indoctrinate their children from values they believe are unhealthy to their children. Tarbell and her coauthors say that education in developing countries is 91% but many lack basic proficiency in reading and math. In the U.S. hard-left groups are supplying social-studies materials for schools (Southern Poverty Law Center and Black Lives Matter) and many parents are fed up with what their children are learning.

One parent who recently took up homeschooling says, “There’s no turning back for us now. The pandemic has been a blessing.” Her comment is echoed by many more parents who are seeing the benefits in their children’s academic achievement as well as their behavior. One parent said, “I had no idea how this was going to go—I just dove in headfirst. I felt God was holding my hand.”

The unintended consequence of the pandemic, says Tarbell, has been parents taking the lead for their children’s education – in academics as well as faith. This turnaround may well impact public schools across the nation as tens of thousands fewer children return to public school classrooms this fall. In $4.83 The Cost to Impact a Child for Year, Tarbell explains how children win with basic education; education that supports core values Christian parents want for their children.
