COVID-19 Update

One in Five England hospital admissions aged 18-34

One in five people being admitted to hospital in England with Covid is aged between 18 and 34, the new Chief Executive of NHS England has said.

Amanda Pritchard said there is “no doubt” that the jabs rollout is having a “major impact” in keeping people out of hospital and saving lives.

NHS England said patients aged 18-34 made up more than 20 per cent of those admitted to hospital last month, up from 5.4 per cent at the peak of the winter wave in January.

If you work with younger people, we encourage you to ask them to consider getting the vaccine. Appointments can be booked via the NHS website, or you they attend a local vaccine drop in clinic
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the Royal College of Midwives have both recommended vaccination as one of the best defences for pregnant women against severe #COVID19 infection and the independent JCVI confirms the jab has been shown to be effective and safe for women carrying a baby. Find out more about pregnancy, breastfeeding, fertility and the COVID-19 vaccination here.

Midwife support at North Tyneside Covid vaccination clinics

To support pregnant people across North Tyneside who are still making a decision about their COVID19 vaccine, North Tyneside Council has partnered up with Northumbria Healthcare and North Tyneside CCG to pilot ‘joined up’ walk in vaccine clinics where a midwife will be present to offer advice. They are: Village Hotel, Newcastle, starting next week - Tuesday 10 August 8:30am to 1pm and Thursday 12 August 2pm to 7pm - and at each Tuesday and Thursday session after that.

VODA News

Living Well North Tyneside provider sign up

Living Well North Tyneside is a new partnership bringing together health, wellbeing, social care and community organisations in one place… with a brand new website launching in late summer 2021. We want to provide the residents of North Tyneside with trusted information and resources on local services, activities and events available to them to help us all live well.

We are inviting all local VCS organisations and groups to sign up to be a provider. The invitation also extends to other organisations, groups and services that have a focus on health and wellbeing. Being a provider allows you to engage with the North Tyneside community and share the services you offer locally. If you would like us to send you the provider link and a handy how-to guide, please email us at hello@livingwellnorthtyneside.co.uk.

We are also keen to share the news of the upcoming Living Well North Tyneside website across North Tyneside and would really appreciate it if you could like / share / follow on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. Thank you!

Relaunch of the Oximeter @ Home Service

From January 2021 to June 2021, VODA volunteers delivered 48 Oximeters to elderly and vulnerable people in North Tyneside who had tested positive for COVID19 so that the patient could monitor their blood oxygen levels at home.

Silent hypoxia, often associated with COVID19, is where a patient wouldn't experience any of the symptoms of low oxygen levels, which could result in a delay in then accessing medical help. The Oximeter alerts the patient if their oxygen intake is at a concerning level so they could then seek treatment earlier. The service ended nationally in June, however North Tyneside CCG made the decision that the service was still needed with the rising infection rates in North Tyneside. It will now run from August through to the winter months and hopefully provide that piece of mind and support to the residents of North Tyneside who need it.

"We were able to monitor my Dad's levels and without it we would not have known he needed to be in hospital."

Sign up to be an Oximeter @ Home volunteer.

Volunteering Update

VODA call for volunteers

With many people returning to 'normal' - going back to work and resuming social activities as restrictions have eased - the number of people finding time to volunteer has dropped. We have also found that many traditional volunteers are still wary about returning to their old roles due to concerns over Covid and have yet to resume volunteering.

VODA, along with many other organisations across the borough, now has a number of volunteer roles that we are very keen to fill, if you are interested in any of these roles, please click on the links below. Or, if you would like to see what other roles are available, you can search our online database of volunteering roles from across North Tyneside.

Active Neighbours field guide

Covid-19 saw an outpouring of community-led support in which 9 million ‘volunteers’, or 15% of the UK’s population, stepped forward to help out. 70% of those who stepped up plan to continue doing the same amount or more once the pandemic is over.

What are the stories behind these statistics? What factors have shaped their desire and ability to contribute and care? What’s needed to support and encourage them to carry on caring? The Active Neighbours Field Guide explores these questions and presents five Active Neighbour groups.
