Soaring Eagle District
Roundtable

Roundtable is a district monthly meeting typically held the second Thursday of the month to help unit leaders plan and carry out their own program. It is designed is to give leaders program ideas, information on events and training opportunities, and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, informed, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts. For updates, follow the district Facebook page. At least one unit leader from each unit should attend this planning meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting, regardless of position within the unit. For questions about Roundtable, contact Jeff Lovejoy.

S.H.A.C. (Scouts Helping at Camp) Corps is an opportunity for troops and crews to give back to camp in the form of a day of service. The Order of the Arrow is leading this opportunity, but this service project is open to all troops and crews. Camp is providing a special patch available to those who provide service. Service projects could include camp maintenance, creating trails, and developing program areas. Letters will be given to youth who need school service hours.

The deadline for registration is the Tuesday prior to the event. Registration is completed by the unit leader or individual Arrowmen (OA members) attending on their own. The registration fee is $20/person and includes four meals.  Troops have the option to cook their own food in the campsite and only pay $3/person.

BSA Membership Fees

The Boy Scouts of America has worked to keep the membership fee as low as possible. Unfortunately, operating costs have continued to rise, and COVID-19 has compounded the need to increase the fee to maintain the program. To ensure we have the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting, effective August 1, 2021, the updated national membership fee is:

  • $72 for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts participants
  • $45 for Exploring participants
  • $30 for council-paid memberships
  • $45 for all adult volunteers (includes cost of background check)
  • $75 for a unit charter fee
  • $25 one-time joining fee for new program participants in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts

Coronavirus Scouting Update

The leadership of the Sam Houston Area Council would like to present the fifteenth update, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and provide protocols for Scouting operations going forward. We appreciate your continued patience as we navigate this situation.

  • Unit programming should be conducted under current guidelines from the State of Texas and the CDC with approval of the unit’s chartered organization and subject to the current COVID-19 protocols of any meeting or activity facility.
  • All visitors and staff that are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 will be exempted from wearing a face covering at all council-owned facilities. The council recommends that those individuals that are not fully vaccinated continue to wear a face covering where social distancing is not possible, except while eating, drinking, or participating in an activity where face coverings are not feasible, such as aquatics.
  • District and Council meetings and events may be conducted in person and will utilize the same face covering policy, unless held at a facility that is not council-owned, as those facilities may have additional restrictions that should be followed.
  • Council camps will continue to utilize the COVID-19 Pre-Screening Form.
  • Social Distancing should be followed in all situations where it is feasible.
  • Overnight district and council activities and trainings are allowed for all Scouting programs. All district activities should have an event plan reviewed and approved by the District ERM Committee, and all council activities should have an event plan reviewed and approved by the Council ERM Committee.
  • The Cockrell Scout Center has resumed normal office hours and operations on Monday through Friday, 8:00am  4:30pm.
The SHAC Enterprise Risk Management Team is working regularly and diligently to determine our plans going forward. If you have any questions regarding the COVID-19 response for the Sam Houston Area Council, please contact Thomas Franklin, Deputy Scout Executive. The council remains committed to keeping our constituents updated regularly with new information as we have it. We will continue to communicate through three main mechanisms: FacebookEmail, and Council Website. Please consult these regularly for updates.
