Canaima Sitio de Patrimonio Mundial: Controversia en la 44a Sesión del Centro de Patrimonio Mundial (UNESCO) en Fuzhou, China - 16-30 julio, 2021
- Después de 3 años de esfuerzos por parte de SOSOrinoco directamente a nivel del Centro de Patrimonio Mundial y múltiples informes sobre la situación crítica de minería ilegal, el régimen de Nicolas Maduro finalmente envió su informe sobre Canaima. El Centro de Patrimonio Mundial emitió una resolución (Pag. 205) que fue aprobada sin enmiendas y sin discusión el 23 de julio, 2021.
- SOSOrinoco apoyó la aprobación de esta resolución y envió sus comentarios y recomendaciones al Comité del Centro de Patrimonio Mundial. Descargue el documento enviado por SOSOrinoco acá
- Resalta la coincidencia entre el cálculo de SOSOrinoco y el régimen sobre la extensión de minería ilegal en el PN Canaima: más de 1000 ha.
- SOSOrinoco también pidió la palabra a través de World Heritage Watch para intervenir con una declaración oral el 24 de julio, 2021 (ver video y documento abajo)
- Acto seguido, la representante del régimen de Maduro, Primera Secretaria María Luisa Medina, pidió la palabra y acusó a SOSOrinoco de ser una organización "para-estatal dedicada a la injerencia política" y de "trabajar en estrecha vinculación con los sectores fascistas de la oposición venezolana"
- Los aliados del régimen Rusia, China, Etiopía, Egipto, Sudáfrica y sorprendentemente Brasil salieron en su defensa y atacaron a SOSOrinoco y a las ONGs en general.
- Lo más lamentable es que ningún país democrático haya protestado ante este ataque sin precedente en el seno del Comité de Patrimonio Mundial, a las ONGs y la sociedad civil (transcripción completa traducida) y video de la discusión:

Canaima World Heritage Site: Controversy at the 44th Session of the World Heritage Centre (UNESCO) in Fuzhou, China - 16-30 julio, 2021
- Three years after SOSOrinoco started to inform the World Heritage Centre and publishing multiple reports about the critical illegal mining situation, the Maduro Regime finally sent a report on Canaima. The World Heritage Centre emitted a resolution (Page 205) that was approved without discussion or amendments on July 23, 2021
- SOSOrinoco supported the approval of the resolution and sent the World Heritage Committee a document with comments and recommendations regarding the resolution. Download the document here
- We would like to highlight the fact that the Maduro Regime's calculation of the extent of illegal mines in Canaima coincides with SOSOrinoco's: over 1000 Hec.
- On behalf of SOSOrinoco, World Heritage Watch asked to take the floor to make a 1 minute oral statement on July 24, 2021 during the WH Committee Meeting (see video and document below)
- Immediately after, the representative of the Maduro Regime, First Secretary Maria Luisa Medina, took the floor and accused SOSOrinoco of being a "para-state organization dedicated to political interference" that "works in close collaboration with the fascist sectors of the Venezuelan opposition"
- The Regime's allies - Russia, China, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa - and surprisingly, Brazil, all came to Venezuela's defense and attacked SOSOrinoco and NGO's in general.
- Disturbingly, not a single democratic State Party spoke up against this unprecedented attack on the role of NGO’s and Civil Society at the World Heritage Centre (full translated transcript and video below):

- El 30 de julio, 2021, la representante de Estados Unidos en la 44 Sesión del Comité de Patrimonio Mundial en Fuzhou, China, entregó para las actas de la Sesión, una declaración escrita y dio una declaración oral ante las cámaras, en la que cuestiona los comentarios hechos por Venezuela y sus aliados el 24 de julio, y apoya la evaluación técnica transparente e independiente de Canaima. - On July 30, 2021, the US representative to the 44th Session of the World Heritage Committee Meeting in Fuzhou, China, submitted a written statement for the record and delivered an oral statement on camera, to dispute comments made on July 24 by Venezuela and its allies, and to encourage a transparent and independent technical evaluation of Canaima.
